  • World without colour and its photographs and optical images

    Open Access•Rahmat Tavakol•ARTICLE•Philosophy of Photography•2020•References: 9

Photographs and optical images, whatever their contents, are imprints of the electromagnetic waves in the (human) visible range of wavelengths, we refer to as light. Furthermore, they are designed to portray different parts of the visible light in terms of different colours, in analogy with the human eyes, however imperfectly. The world outside our eyes and cameras, however, is permeated by electromagnetic waves with much wider spectrum of wavele…

  • The time(s) of the photographed

    Open Access•Rahmat Tavakol•ARTICLE•Philosophy of Photography•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 4

The relationship between the photographic and optical images and time has been the subject of great deal of debate. Despite their differences, what many of these considerations have in common is their focus on the receiver, whether mechanical (the camera), biological (the eye-brain as the optical receiver), social or the memory and imagination of the observer. My aim here is to shift the emphasis from the receiver to the object or vista that is p…

  • How Untidy is God's Mind? A Note on the Dynamical Implications of Nancy Cartwright's Metaphysics

HARMKE KAMMINGA, Rahmat Tavakol et al.•ARTICLE•The British Journal for the…•1993•References: 1

  • Fragility and Deterministic Modelling in the Exact Sciences

    Rahmat Tavakol, R K TAVAKOL•ARTICLE•The British Journal for the…•1991•Cited by: 3•References: 8

The theoretical framework adopted in the exact sciences, for constructing and testing deterministic theories on the one hand, and modelling and analysis of observed phenomena on the other, is often implicitly assumed to be that of structural stability. In view of recent developments in nonlinear dynamics, it is argued here that in general it may not be possible to assume strict determinism and structural stability simultaneously; either strict de…

  • Radical Islam

    Rahmat Tavakol•REVIEW•Sociological Analysis•1987

recent years radical fundamentalists have had a formidable intellectual and social impact on Sunni Islam countries such as Egypt, Syria, and Lebanon. highly acclaimed book by an eminent Arabist focuses on the development of Sunni Muslim fundamentalism, discussing how it rejected Western values, broke with pan-Arabism, and took on an activist political position. enlarged edition contains a new chapter, In the Shadow of Khomeini, which considers th…
