Smart Walk
This article reports the results of Smart Walk: a randomized pilot trial of an 8-month culturally tailored, smartphone-delivered physical activity (PA) intervention for African American women with obesity. Sixty participants (age range = 24−49 years; BMI range = 30−58 kg/m2) were randomized to the Smart Walk intervention (n = 30) or a wellness comparison intervention (n = 30). Results supported the acceptability and feasibility of the interventio…
Walkability around the worksite and self-reported and accelerometer-measured physical activity among adults
Changes in Adiposity and Cognitive Function in Older Adults
A greater decrease in %BMI (>5%) and %WC (>10%) change was associated with greater cognitive loss observed over time
Early Care and Education Center Environmental Factors Associated with Product- and Process-Based Locomotor Outcomes in Preschool-Age Children
Environmental characteristics of early care and education centers (ECECs) are an important context for preschool-aged children's development, but few studies have examined their relationship with children's locomotor skills. We examined the association between characteristics of the ECEC environment with quantitatively (i.e., product-based) and qualitatively (i.e., process-based) measured locomotor skills, using the Progressive Aerobic Cardiovasc…
Dietary Patterns with Healthy and Unhealthy Traits Among Overweight/Obese Hispanic Women with or at High Risk for Type 2 Diabetes
Dose-response associations between accelerometry measured physical activity and sedentary time and all cause mortality
Walk Score and objectively measured physical activity within a national cohort
BACKGROUND: There have been mixed findings regarding the relationship between walkability and level of physical activity in adults. METHODS: Participants from The REasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) national cohort (N=7561) were used to examine the association between Walk Score and physical activity measured via accelerometry. The subsample included geographically diverse adults, who identified as black or white, an…
Health-seeking behaviors and health information gathering in older Mexican American males
Evidence suggests that men's health disparities are linked to attitudes and beliefs toward health promotion and risk reduction, participation in high-risk behaviors, and limited health care access and use influenced by socioeconomic challenges. However, we know less about the specific factors related to health disparities in older Mexican American males. The purpose of this study was to explore the cultural. social, environmental, and gender fact…
Utility of Social Cognitive Theory in Intervention Design for Promoting Physical Activity among African-American Women
Findings explicate the utility of SCT as a behavioral change theoretical basis for tailoring physical activity programs to African-American women
Optimal Health (Spirit, Mind, and Body)
The Associations Between Park Environments and Park Use in Southern US Communities
PURPOSE: To document park use and park and neighborhood environment characteristics in rural communities, and to examine the relationship between park characteristics and park use. METHODS: The System for Observing Play and Recreation in Communities measured use in 42 target areas across 6 community parks in May 2010 and October 2010. Direct observation instruments were used to assess park and neighborhood environment characteristics. Logistic re…
Developing a Research Agenda for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention in High-Risk Rural Communities
The National Institutes of Health convened a workshop to engage researchers and practitioners in dialogue on research issues viewed as either unique or of particular relevance to rural areas, key content areas needed to inform policy and practice in rural settings, and ways rural contexts may influence study design, implementation, assessment of outcomes, and dissemination. Our purpose was to develop a research agenda to address the disproportion…
Promoting a Bicycle-Friendly Environment
This project illustrates how community members can apply research findings to an educational video of high quality with local relevance. The leadership from community members in making the video set the foundation for local ownership
Environmental Correlates of Overweight and Obesity in Community Residing Older Adults
This research suggests that neighborhood environment may have an influence on BMI above and beyond walking activity
