The Historicity of International Politics: Imperialism and the Presence of the Past
The past is constantly present, not least in the study of imperialism and imperial forms of power in international politics. This volume shows how historical trajectories have shaped international affairs covering a wide range of imperial and (post-) colonial settings in international politics, substantiating the claim that imperial and colonial legacies - and how they have transformed over time - are foundational to the historicity of internatio…
How the global became a framework for numerical communication: A comment
This article is a comment on contributions to a special volume of the European Review of History, “The International Statistical Institute, 1885–1938”

Einführung: Entwicklungsarbeit und globale Modernisierungsexpertise
The articles in this issue investigate the history of development in so-called "underdeveloped" areas of the world in both the colonial and postcolonial period. Each essay situates political change in longer historical processes, analyzing global initiatives in the local contexts in which they were played out and probing the longue dure of expert cultures, knowledge systems, and their global flows and regional adaptations. Methodological approach…
Die "Dritte Welt" als Theorieeffekt: Ökonomisches Wissen und globale Differenz
The notion of a “third world” rose to prominence in international political discourse around 1960 and vanished around 1990. It designated a group of countries aligned with neither of the two other worlds. I argue in this article that the term needs to be situated in a larger history of the perception of global difference at least as old as the Enlightenment. The peculiar career of the concept of the “third world” is connected both to changes in t…
Auf der Suche nach der Ökonomie: Historische Annäherungen
Was ist Wirtschaft?
In Search of Economics. Historical Approaches
Was zählt der Preis? Dogmengeschichte und Wissensgeschichte der Ökonomie
What’s in a Price? History of Economic Ideologies vs. History of Economic Ideas. This paper suggests applying the approach of a historical epistemology to the field of economics. We observe that an assumedly fundamental opposition between the market and the state dominates popular images of the history of economic ideas. Two conflicting ideologies are roughly assigned to the two opposing sides in the Cold War. To this historical narrative the pap…

Digitale Landschaften (review)
Reviewed by: Digitale Landschaften Daniel Speich (bio) Digitale Landschaften. By Manuel Schramm. Stuttgart: Franz Steiner, 2009. Pp. 212. €36. This book on digital landscapes addresses an important topic that has not as yet been studied by historians of technology very thoroughly. It aims at localizing the recent automation of geographical data gathering, processing, and representation within the broad context of a history of cartography. In roug…
The use of global abstractions: National income accounting in the period of imperial decline
This article explores the history of a conceptual world economic order of nations created by statistically minded economists over the last seventy years. Drawing upon work by Colin Clark, Richard Stone, and Simon Kuznets from the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, it reconstructs the rise of new economic indicators referring to economic inequality. Two forms of intellectual practice can be identified that characterized a remarkable shift in knowledge produ…
Mountains Made in Switzerland: Facts and Concerns in Nineteenth-Century Cartography
Argument Cultural history has investigated the appropriation of mountain wilderness in considerable detail, without however systematically including the contributions of science and technology in the process. This paper suggests a way of filling this gap. It argues that cartography was instrumental in giving mountains their modern shape. In the course of the nineteenth century, mountains arguably gained a new factual existence at the intersection…

Draining the Marshlands, Disciplining the Masses: The Linth Valley Hydro Engineering Scheme (1807-1823) and the Genesis of Swiss National Unity
The first large-scale hydro technical project of modern Switzerland, the Linth Valley hydro engineering scheme (1807-1823), has been considered to be 'a great moral endeavour'. The paper asks, what historical conditions made it possible to conceive of hydro technical engineering in moral categories? Following the political views of the main promoter of the scheme, Hans Konrad Escher (1767-1823), it shows, that within a specific ideological framew…
