Could Closing the Gap Close the Risk? The Gender Pay Gap and Women's Sexual Health Outcomes
The United States has one of the highest rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among high-income countries, with women—particularly young Black women—bearing the greatest burden. Gendered power dynamics are a driver of women’s STI risk, yet most research has focused on couple relationships, rather than the structural gender inequalities that shape power imbalances. This study investigates the extent to which the gender pay gap, a key in…
Municipal social expenditures and maternal health disparities
BACKGROUND: Local government expenditures provide services and benefits that can affect health but the extent to which they are associated with narrowing or widening of racial/ethnic and socioeconomic disparities in health is unknown. We examined race/ethnicity-stratified and education-stratified associations between municipal social expenditures-those on housing, transportation, education, and other society-wide needs-and serious life-threatenin…

Gender Differences in Immigrant Assimilation Activities in the US
This study uses the American Time Use Survey for 2003–17 to explore gender differences in time allocated toward activities that facilitate immigrant assimilation, including activities outside the home, with non-family members, and in paid work, education, and shopping. The study finds that among the first and 1.5 generations, respectively, wives spend seventy-nine and thirty-one minutes less per day than husbands in market work, education, and sh…
Medicaid Expansions and Participation in Supplemental Security Income by Noncitizens
Objectives. To estimate the effect of Medicaid expansion on noncitizens’ and citizens’ participation in the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) expanded Medicaid eligibility to cover low-income nonelderly adults without children, thus delinking their Medicaid participation from participation in the SSI program. Methods. Using data from the Social Security Administration for 2009 through 2018 (n = 1020 state-y…

Disability among children of immigrants from India and China
We investigate whether there is excess morbidity among daughters of Indian or Chinese immigrants in the US by studying the prevalence of disability among children. We use data from the 2012-14 American Community Surveys on approximately 20,000 US-born children of Indian and Chinese immigrants. Children of US natives are used as a comparison group to account for innate differences in disability between the sexes. Results indicate that there is exc…

Culture, Labor Supply, and Fertility Across Immigrant Generations in the United States
Recent immigration to the United States and other developed nations has increasingly been from countries that have relatively traditional gender norms. This study uses data from the Current Population Survey for 2000–14 to investigate how source-country gender norms influence the labor supply and fertility of married women across immigrant generations in the US. It finds that immigrants’ and descendants’ labor supply and fertility are associated …
Drug adherence levels are falling down again’
Integrated models of HIV/AIDS service delivery are believed to have advantages over stand-alone models of care from health planners' and providers' perspectives. Integration models differ, yet there is little information about the influence of differing models on workers' beliefs about models' efficacy. Here, we examine the effect of integration of HIV care into the general health system in India. In 2014, India replaced its stand-alone model of …

Effect of Food Subsidies on Micronutrient Consumption
In this article, we study the effect of an exogenous increase in wheat and rice price subsidy to poor families resulting from a targeted food price subsidy programme in India called the Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS) on micronutrient intake in low-income families. Descriptive results show that wheat and rice have one of the lowest micronutrient density scores, suggesting that these are poor suppliers of micronutrients. Empirical analy…
