  • Contraceptive and fertility behavior of family planning clinic dropouts: A Maryland study

    L P Chow, Rowland V Rider et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1987•Cited by: 1•References: 4

A study to examine the acceptance of and drop-out from family planning clinic services in Maryland was undertaken during 1984-85 by interviewing a random sample of 1,020 women who came to the clinics as "new clients" during 1980 through 1982 when they were 20 through 39 years of age. This article examines the contraceptive and fertility behavior after their last clinic visits. The results showed that most of these women were "protected" from preg…

  • Proximate Determinants of Fertility and Policy Implications in Beijing

Shaoxian Wang, Yu-De Chen et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•1987•Cited by: 6

Data from a 1982 sample survey of 3,830 married women below age 50 in a district of Beijing City are applied to the Bongaarts model of the proximate determinants of fertility. A total fertility rate (TFR) of 0.75 births per woman is estimated from the model, compared with a TFR of 1.24 actually observed from the survey. The estimated TFR (0.75) results from the assumed total fecundity (TF) of 15.30 births per woman being inhibited by the indexes …

  • Oral contraceptives and mortality from circulatory system diseases: An epidemiologic study in Taiwan

    L P Chow, C C Lin et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•1984

An epidemiological study on the association between oral contraceptive (OC) use and circulatory system disease (CSD) mortality undertaken in Taiwan by proxy interview of closest family members of 306 deceased cases, 305 deceased controls, and 611 healthy neighborhood controls indicated that the relative risk between the cases and health controls was 0.98 (0.62-1.54) and that between cases and health controls was 0.82 (0.56-1.21). Use of OC by Tai…

  • Fertility Intentions and Behavior: Some Findings from Taiwan

    N K Nair, L P Chow•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•1980•Cited by: 9

Couples behavioral conformity to their stated reproductive intentions has been investigated using longitudinal data from Taiwan during 1974-77. Desire for additional children was the most important predictor of fertility. Couples who did not desire additional fertility appeared to make a greater effort to avoid pregnancy than others but negative intentions seem to have been considerably disregarded even through contraceptives were abundanntly ava…

  • Feasibility of the randomized response technique in rural Ethiopia

    L P Chow, W Gruhn et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1979•Cited by: 2•References: 13

A multiple answer model of Randomized Response Technique (known as Hopkins RRT Model II) was tried in a rural area (Nekempte) in Ethiopia to estimate the incidence of induced abortion among currently married women of childbearing age. In the RRT adopted here, the question on abortion--sensitive as it is--was preceded by two innocuous "practice questions". Despite the very low literacy level of the women, nearly all of them cooperated. The RRT est…

  • Induced Abortion and Contraceptive Practice: An Experience in Taiwan

    I H Su, I Su et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•1976

Once a woman has had an abortion, is she more likely to have another one because she has overcome the emotional barrier to the operation, or is she less likely to have another because the nature of the experience will lead her to practice contraception to avoid repeating the experience? A study by Chow and Rider (1972) in Taoyuan, Taiwan, disclosed that induced abortions do not occur independently of each other and that there seems to be a habitu…

  • IUD Reinsertion in Taichung: A Study of First and Later Segments

J S Chen, Jingsheng Chen et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•1975

This study is based on data collected from 5832 women who accepted I UDs mostly the Lippes Loop in the Taichung Medical follow-up study and who were recruited during July 1962-May 1965. The acceptors had regular follow-up examinations during the 6th and 12th months after 1st insertion and annually thereafter. Women who failed to come to the clinics were interviewed in their homes by trained interviewers. Life-table techniques were used to analyze…

  • The island-wide family planning programme in Taiwan: Analysis of the accomplishments of the past eight years

    L P Chow•ARTICLE•Population Studies•1974•Cited by: 1•References: 4

Taiwan's island-wide family planning programme is the showcase of similar programmes in the developing world. In the past eight years, between 1964 and 1971, a cumulative total of 935,000 married women accepted the Lippes loop, 236,000 accepted the pill, and 116,000 couples accepted condoms. The prevalence rates of loop and pill users at the end of 1971 are estimated at 18·7 per cent and 3-6 per cent respectively. The programme had been recruitin…

  • Maternal nutrition: A positive approach in family planning

    Andie M Hseuh, S C Hsu et al.•ARTICLE•Ecology of Food and Nutrition•1973

Concern about the rapid growth of the world population and its impact on natural resources, particularly the food supplies, demands active programs on limitation of birth rate by family planning which means fewer babies. This paper describes results of studies on laboratory animals (rats) which demonstrate that feeding female rats a diet containing good quality protein during the reproductive period will result in offspring with low infant mortal…

    Open Access•Albert I Hermalin, L P Chow et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•1971

The Second Taiwan IUD Follow-up Survey, reported on here, is a representative sample of all IUD acceptors in Taiwan up to the middle of 1966. The data show that 30 months after insertion, 36% of acceptors are continuing users, on a first segment basis, and that if reinsertions are taken into account, the proportion increases to 45%. Compared with extensive clinic data from the city of Taichung, the island-wide termination rates are about 5% highe…

  • A stochastic approach to the estimation of the prevalence of IUD: Example of Taiwan, Republic of China

    Open Access•P T Liu, L P Chow•ARTICLE•Demography•1971

Assuming three patterns of changes in number of new IUD insertions, three stochastic models have been developed for the estimation of the “prevalence” of IUD in situ at a given point of time. The advantages of these models, compared with the conventional ways of estimating IUD prevalence, rest with their ease of use and simplicity of method for calculating variances of the estimates. The models are also useful for family planning administrators t…

  • Family planning in Taiwan, Republic of China: Progress and prospects

    L P Chow•ARTICLE•Population Studies•1970•Cited by: 3•References: 2

The family planning programme in Taiwan is considered to have been most successful and has been systematically evaluated. In the light of some expressed scepticism, however, its impact on fertility will have to be carefully reviewed. The present article discusses six specific problems : How many women have accepted the Lippes loops or pills offered in the programme ? How long will the loop stay in utero ? What proportion of married women is curre…

  • Taiwan: Demographic Impact of an IUD Program

    L P Chow, M C Chang et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•1969•Cited by: 2

The pilot study to evaluate the demographic impact of the IUD program by matching was undertaken in 4 townships in central Taiwan. Age education open interval and number of live births were the criteria used for the matching. The results showed that 1) IUD acceptors are strongly selected in terms of than average fertility; 2) the IUD program was able to reduce the fertility of the acceptors by 80%; 3) on the average 158 live births were prevented…

  • A study on the demographic impact of an IUD programme

    L P Chow•ARTICLE•Population Studies•1968•Cited by: 4•References: 3

This paper discusses and presents data obtained through various studies and surveys on the effect of the IUD contraceptive programme in Taiwan. It has been demonstrated that the fertility of IUD acceptors before first acceptance was 58 % higher than that of married women in general and that, after acceptance, it declined by about 76%. The corresponding fertility decline among married women in general was only about %. Acceptors had had more recen…
