  • Demographic dividend in Latin America

    Open Access•Guido Pinto Aguirre•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018

Demographic dividend is the potential economic growth caused by the change of population age distribution. With the continuous decline of fertility rate for decades, the age distribution of the population has changed from young age structure to young people of working age. This provides a window of opportunity for further economic growth and poverty reduction. In other words, as the relative size of the labor force increases, the country’s produc…

The main purpose of this paper is to understand the relationship existing between Gender-Based Violence (GVB) and the Use of Reproductive Health and Family Planning services. To carry out this task, we use multivariate logit regression models to explore the direction and strength of the relationship, using a population-based sample for Bolivian women during 2003-2004. Results show a strong, negative and significant relationship between GVB and us…

  • Resumption Of Postpartum Fecundability In Rural Guatemala

  • Child Mortality and Reproductive Patterns in Bolivia, 1993-1998

  • Breastfeeding and Postpartum Amenorrhea in Rural Guatemala

    Open Access•Guido Pinto Aguirre, Robert E Jones•ARTICLE•Población y Salud en Mesoamérica•2005

The association between breastfeeding patterns and resumption of postpartum menstruation was examined in rural Guatemalan women from the INCAP longitudinal study (1969-1977). It was distinguished among women who experienced infant mortality before menses resumed, women who weaned before menses resumed, and women who had return of menses while still breastfeeding. Weaning and infant mortality before menses resumes are significant risk factors for …

  • Effects of Lactation on Post-partum Amenorrhoea

Guido Pinto Aguirre, Alberto Palloni et al.•ARTICLE•Population Studies•1998•Cited by: 1

In this paper we re-estimate the effects of breastfeeding patterns on the timing of resumption of menses after controlling for maternal nutrition and maternal stressor variables. The analysis shows that simple hazard models, used on data from a longitudinal study in Guatemala, provide estimates of effects on timing of resumption of menstruation that are (a) comparable to others discussed in the recent literature and (b) generally consistent with …

  • Economic Swings and Demographic Changes in the History of Latin America

Alberto Palloni, Kenneth Hill et al.•ARTICLE•Population Studies•1996•Cited by: 22

In this paper we study the effects of short-term fluctuations in indicators of economic well-being on selected demographic response such as births, marriages and deaths at age intervals in eleven Latin American countries between 1910 and 1990. We use conventional distributed lag models to assess the magnitude and direction of effects and test a variety of hypotheses some of which have been posed to hold in Western Europe and others that are more …
