  • Alzheimer's disease and the relationship between silicon and aluminium in water supplies in northern England

    Geoffrey A Taylor, Andrew J Newens et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1995•Cited by: 1•References: 2

  • Risk factors in clinically diagnosed presenile dementia of the Alzheimer type

    D P Forster, Andrew J Newens et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1995•Cited by: 3•References: 23

STUDY OBJECTIVE--To investigate the relationship between presenile dementia of the Alzheimer type (PDAT) and family history, medical history, cigarette smoking, and exposure to aluminum. DESIGN--A case-control study in which 109 cases of clinically diagnosed PDAT and 109 controls matched for age and sex were compared for exposure to the risk factors. Odds ratios (ORs) were calculated using McNemar's test. SETTING--The northern health region of En…

  • Death certification after a diagnosis of presenile dementia

    Andrew J Newens, D P Forster et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1993•References: 4

STUDY OBJECTIVES--To assess the value of death certification for the epidemiological study of dementia, the frequency with which the condition was recorded on death certificates of patients diagnosed with some form of dementia before the age of 65 years was studied. A further objective was to identify variables associated with failure to record dementia on the certificate. DESIGN--A cohort of patients with presenile dementia, differentiated by a …

  • Characteristics of patients, type of accident, and mortality in a consecutive series of head injuries admitted to a neurosurgical unit

    T A Kerr, D W Kay et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1971•Cited by: 1•References: 4

There have been surprisingly few studies of representative samples of civilian head injuries, the great majority of which, unlike wartime injuries are closed injuries. Recent reports have come from the United States (Gurdjian and Thomas, 1965), Australia (Selecki, Hoy, and Ness, 1967), and Canada (Klonoff and Thompson, 1969). In this country, Barr and Ralston (1964) described 532 patients admitted over a five-year period to a general hospital wit…

    D W K Kay, D W Kay et al.•ARTICLE•Population Studies•1965

This paper describes progress made in developing a national programme for the collec- tion and use ofpatient data from mental hospitals and related psychiatric facilities in the USA.Examples are provided of the various types of tabulations that may be made to des- cribe the age, sex, diagnostic length ofstay, and related characteristics ofpatients receiving services in mental hospitals, of methods of analysing such data to reflect charges that ta…
