A 30-year trend of dairy consumption and its determinants among income groups in Iranian households
Introduction Milk and dairy products provide essential nutrients and have the potential to prevent chronic diseases, thus reducing healthcare costs. However, there is a lack of consistent and updated data on dairy consumption trends in Iran. This study aims to analyze the trends in dairy consumption among Iranian households from 1991 to 2021, focusing on household-level determinants across different expense groups. Methods The study uses data fro…
Dietary diversity and its association with changes in anthropometric indices of community-dwelling older adults in Tehran, Iran
The dietary intake and dietary diversity of older adult residents of Tehran declined dramatically with age, and a higher DDS was associated with improved anthropometric indices. DDS had an inverse relationship with general obesity in the studied participants, and the passage of time did not affect this relationship. The DDS can be used as a predictive index and is a powerful tool for investigating changes in nutritional status in longitudinal stu…
Improving community readiness among Iranian local communities to prevent childhood obesity
The CRITCO intervention was registered at Iran Registry for Clinical Trials ( http://irct.ir ; IRCT20191006044997N1) on 11/11/2019
Is nutritional functional diversity in the rural food and nutrition system associated with food security and nutrient adequacy? A case study of rural areas of Zahedan district, Iran
NFD score, as a relatively new metric, could help in determining diversity from farm to diet and identifying the gaps to plan appropriate interventions for improving diversity in the local food system
Food Addiction and Binge Eating Disorder in Relation to Dietary Patterns and Anthropometric Measurements
Obesity is associated with maladaptive eating behaviors, including food addiction (FA) and binge eating disorder (BED). However, the key factors influencing the development of maladaptive eating behaviors remain unknown. Adherence to specified dietary patterns has been suspected of making indirect impacts. This study investigates the association of FA and BED with dietary patterns and anthropometric measurements among 400 Iranian adults (aged 18-…
Who really counts in Iran's National Food Assistance Program? Lessons from multi-stakeholder processes in the wicked policy area of food security
Multi-stakeholder processes - as a necessary part in the development of public policies - can provide diverse perspectives to inform and to improve food security policy-making. Iran's National Food Assistance Program (NFAP) is one of the major welfare programs in Iran that reduces food insecutiry to low-income households. This study aimed to identify and to categorize actual and potential stakeholders in NFAP using the stakeholder salience model.…
Association between the socio-economic status of households and a more sustainable diet
Objective: A sustainable diet is an affordable diet with low environmental impact, high food security and sufficient healthiness. The present study aimed to assess the correlation between the socio-economic status of households and a sustainable diet. Design: The food basket and socio-economic data of Iranian households were evaluated during 2016–2018. The households were classified based on the sustainability of their diet by determining the die…
Designing a healthy, low-cost and environmentally sustainable food basket
Objective: Sustainable diets are diets with low environmental impacts and high affordability which contribute to food and nutrition security. The present study aimed to develop a healthy, low-cost and environmental-friendly food basket for Iran based on current consumption. Design: The Households Income and Expenditure Survey data were used. Linear Programming was utilised to obtain the optimal diets, separately, for each goal of the sustainable …
Validity and reliability of the Iranian version of the Yale Food Addiction Scale for obese women
Objective: The face and construct validity of the Iranian version of the Yale Food Addiction Scale (YFAS) was evaluated, and the convergent validity and test–retest reliability of both Iranian and original versions of YFAS for obese women were assessed. Design: The internal consistency of the YFAS was analysed. Exploratory factor analysis for dichotomous data was performed by varimax rotation, polychoric correlation coefficients and confirmatory …
Food and nutrition literacy (FNLIT) and its predictors in primary schoolchildren in Iran
This study used a locally designed and validated questionnaire to describe the distribution of food and nutrition literacy (FNLIT) in a cross-sectional sample of 803 students aged 10–12 years from elementary schools in Tehran city, Iran. Logistic regression was used to assess the extent to which various independent covariates were associated with low FNLIT. The data were used to identify significant differences using a range of social and cultura…
Setting research priorities to achieve long-term health targets in Iran
BACKGROUND: In 2015, it was estimated that the burden of disease in Iran comprised of 19 million disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), 74% of which were due to non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The observed leading causes of death were cardiovascular diseases (41.9%), neoplasms (14.9%), and road traffic injuries (7.4%). Even so, the health research investment in Iran continues to remain limited. This study aims to identify national health resea…
Effectiveness of the national food supplementary program on children growth and nutritional status in Iran
This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the national food distribution program on the growth and nutritional status of malnourished or growth‐retarded children in 2 provinces of Iran. A quasi‐experimental design was used for the effectiveness evaluation. Qualitative data were gathered to explain the results. An intervention group consisted of 362 children aged 6–72 months who were under coverage of the program. These children received m…
Process evaluation of a national, community-based, food supplementary programme for improving the nutritional status of children in Iran
Objective To evaluate the process of implementation of a national nutritional programme for improving the nutritional status of children in Iran. Design A cross-sectional process evaluation was carried out using field observations, document reviews, semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions. Setting Data were collected across urban and rural areas of Qazvin and Semnan provinces of Iran, March–September 2014. Subjects Mothers ( n 362)…
Major dietary patterns in relation to demographic and socio-economic status and food insecurity in two Iranian ethnic groups living in Urmia, Iran
Objective To identify major dietary patterns and their association with socio-economic status (SES) and food insecurity in two major ethnic groups living in Urmia, north-west Iran. Design A cross-sectional study. Setting All four geographical zones of Urmia city. Subjects Participants ( n 723; 427 women and 296 men), aged 20–64 years, from two ethnic groups (445 Azeri Turks and 278 Kurds). Results Three major dietary patterns were extracted: ‘Tra…
Mother’s Self-Efficacy Mediates the Relationship Between Household Food Insecurity and Maternal Infant Feeding Styles
Food insecurity, socio-economic factors and weight status in two Iranian ethnic groups
These findings show that the association between moderate-to-severe FI and risk of general/central obesity varies in Azeris, compared to Kurds. However, better SES decreased the chance of general/central obesity in both ethnic groups
Multidimensional Life Table Estimation of the Total Fertility Rate and Its Components
Using discrete-time survival models of parity progression and illustrative data from the Philippines, this article develops a multivariate multidimensional life table of nuptiality and fertility, the dimensions of which are age, parity, and duration in parity. The measures calculated from this life table include total fertility rate (TRF), total marital fertility rate (TMFR), parity progression ratios (PPR), age-specific fertility rates, mean and…
Multidimensional life-table analysis of the effect of child mortality on total fertility in India, 1992-93, 1998-99, 2005-06
This paper presents a new method for estimating the effect of child mortality on the total fertility rate (TFR). The method is based on discrete-time survival models of parity progression that allow construction of a multivariate multidimensional life table of fertility with four dimensions: woman's age, parity, duration in parity, and number of previous child deaths. Additional socio-economic variables are included in the set of predictor variab…
Multivariate analysis of parity progression–based measures of the total fertility rate and its components
This article describes a methodology for applying a discrete-time survival model—the complementary log-log model—to estimate effects of socioeconomic variables on (1) the total fertility rate and its components and (2) trends in the total fertility rate and its components. For the methodology to be applicable, the total fertility rate (TFR) must be calculated from parity progression ratios (PPRs). The components of the TFR are PPRs, the total mar…
