Korea: The Relationship Between IUD Retention and Check-up Visits
The effect of requested time of revisit on retention of IUD was studied in 491 women whose devices were inserted between February and June 1967 in Koyang County Korea. The data presented were collected up to July 15 1967. Contrary to expectations the longer the requested time from initial insertion the higher the retention rate. Removals for women requested to return at 1 week 2 weeks and 1 month were 7.35 5.63 and 4.00/100 women-months of exposu…
Improving Access to the IUD: Experiments in Koyang, Korea
The Koyang Study: Results of Two Action Programs
The Koyang Family Planning research Pilot Study preject was established in Koyand Gun county Korea in March 1962 by the Yonsei University College of Medicine. The aim was to investigate the possibility of introducing family planning and to make a scientific assessment of any change in pre - and postprogram fertility behavior. A four phase filed program was conducted: 1) training 2) baseline survey of fertility and attitude toward family planning …
Predicting the Adoption of Family Planning
Family planning programs might become more efficient if it were possible to predict which women are particularly willing to adopt contraception. In this report a special computer program was applied to data from the Koyang family planning study in Korea to identify groups of women with especially high and especially low acceptance rates in the program. This analysis was conducted by Dr. John Ross during a postdoctoral year at the University of Mi…
The AID computer programme, used to predict adoption of family planning in Koyang
A highly useful computer programme has been developed for predicting values of a dependent variable. Basically a sequential analysis of variance, it creates a tree of two-way splits of the sample. Each split maximizes the reduction of unexplained variance in the dependent variable. The programme is remarkably sensitive to interactions, since it assumes neither linear relationships, normal distributions, nor homoscedasticity. This programme is put…
Fertility and family planning in rural Korea
In December 1961, the government of the Republic of Korea adopted a programme of family planning as part of its public health services. In 1962 a pilot research project was begun, under university auspices, with the object of demonstrating and assessing what can be achieved through intensive family planning education and services. Wondang Myun near Seoul, with a rural population of 9,000 in seven villages, was chosen for the study. A baseline sur…
