Nuclear Hegemony and Material Indices
Following Alain Badiou's modeling of change in relation to events, this study engages New Materialist issues of human-nonhuman relations and ontologies so as to situate satirical poetry appearing in Japanese daily newspapers and tweets after the Fukushima Nuclear Disaster as challenges to government and media obfuscation, thus broadening roles for creative writing in ecocriticism
Postcolonial positioning and Japanese imperial affect in interwar Dada prose poems
Between the Russo-Japanese War (1904–1905) and the Mukden Incident (1931), Japan’s mounting colonial presence manifested itself in the activities of the South Manchuria Railway Company as well as in the Japanese forces’ skirmishes for control of the region. The poet Kitagawa Fuyuhiko (1900–1990) would draw on his memories of Manchuria, where he lived until attending college in Kyoto, to situate hyperobjects and colonial minutiae in counter-hegemo…
Epistemological Opacity and a Queer Relational Jouissance
This article critically situates queer theory and writings on bisexuality in light of the author's experience of orientation fluidity while emigrating from the United States to Taiwan. It suggests that identity, or even identification, may be too limiting to describe community support for relationships within a spectrum ranging from precarious to overdetermined. Focusing on the socioromantic contextualization of embodied jouissance within support…
Richard Wright's search for a counter-hegemonic genre
Examining Richard Wright's vast haiku oeuvre, this article shows how he used haiku to reinvent the form in English by repeating playfully anamorphic imagery so as to construct a poetic matrix modelled on, but distinct from, the categories he saw used in Japanese haiku. Writing haiku in this productive manner produced Nietzschean jouissance rather than resentment, so that the affective dimension of a multitude of socio-economic relations, includin…
Cheerful dissensus
This essay demonstrates how ‘current events senryū’ has grafted onto the intertextual structuration of traditional Japanese poetics, a foregrounding of contemporary events. As premodern Japanese poetic forms (such as haiku) depend upon working in tandem with matrices of conventional uses and associations, their intertextual deference is extreme. In modern writing, this extreme intertextuality allows foregrounding of multiple intertexts from vario…
Resisting Imperial Jouissance
This essay critically examines various strategies taken in the most compelling contemporary American antiwar poetry written against the occupation of Iraq. It finds both limitations, as many poets have succumbed to a postmodern distance from events, and brilliance, in poets who have discerned ways of eliciting hope in the aims of such poetry. Linda Hutcheon's term transideological irony is used to show how many poets are complicit, in their irony…

Nativist legacies of desinicization and nationalist sentiment in poetry during the Second Sino–Japanese War

Sustaining Jouissance
This essay argues that Tawara Machi's poetry both sustains the intertextual bias of classical court poetry and uses it to incorporate some of the most ubiquitous texts of our age: advertising and other consumer discourse. Tawara's reinvention of contemporary tanka is based on the application of the conventional matrices of associations in classical poetic language to contemporary consumer-oriented intertexts. Foregrounding intertextuality provide…
