    Egbert Klautke•ARTICLE•Revue germanique internationale•2022

  • The Germans are beating us at our own game: American eugenics and the German sterilization law of 1933

    Open Access•Egbert Klautke•ARTICLE•History of the Human Sciences•2016•References: 6

This article assesses interactions between American and German eugenicists in the interwar period. It shows the shifting importance and leading roles of German and American eugenicists: while interactions and exchanges between German and American eugenicists in the interwar period were important and significant, it remains difficult to establish direct American influence on Nazi legislation. German experts of race hygiene who advised the Nazi gov…

  • The French Reception of Völkerpsychologie and the Origins of the Social Sciences

    Open Access•Egbert Klautke•ARTICLE•Modern Intellectual History•2013•Cited by: 3•References: 18

This article reconstructs French readings and debates of German approaches to Völkerpsychologie . Irrespective of its academic credentials, Völkerpsychologie was a symptomatic approach during a transformative period in German, and indeed European, intellectual history: based on the idea of progress—both scientific and moral—and on the belief in the primordial importance of the Volk , it represented the mindset of “ascendant liberalism” in an almo…

  • Max Weber in America * Heidegger in America

    Egbert Klautke•ARTICLE•German History•2013

Scaff and Woessner’s studies both fit neatly into the vogue of ‘transnational’ history; they follow the reception and appropriation of the works of Max Weber and Martin Heidegger in twentieth-century America. Despite the obvious differences between Weber and Heidegger, they have both become ‘classic’ authors in their respective disciplines of sociology and philosophy; no lecture course in modern German intellectual history can ignore them. Equall…

  • Defining the Volk: Willy Hellpach's Völkerpsychologie between National Socialism and Liberal Democracy, 1934–1954

    Egbert Klautke•ARTICLE•History of European Ideas•2013•Cited by: 2

This article introduces the Völkerpsychologie of the German psychologist and liberal politician Willy Hellpach. It shows how Hellpach used the once venerable approach of Völkerpsychologie, introduced by Moritz Lazarus and Heymann Steinthal in the nineteenth century, to adapt to the Third Reich and distract the authorities from his political career. The article provides a close reading of Hellpach's main text on the subject, the Einführung in die …

  • Die Insel. Eine Geschichte West-Berlins, 1948-1990

    Egbert Klautke•ARTICLE•German History•2011

Die Insel is a comprehensive history of West Berlin, that unwanted by-product of the Cold War. Rott stresses the peculiar character of the Western half of the German capital after the Second World War, presenting West Berlin as a ‘third Germany’: related to and dependent on, but also separate from the two German states. An independent study of West Berlin is indispensable, he argues, not least because its unique history has been neglected by hist…

  • Anti-Americanism in Twentieth-Century Europe

    Open Access•Egbert Klautke•ARTICLE•The Historical Journal•2011•Cited by: 1•References: 18

Since the beginning of the twentieth century, European observers and commentators have frequently employed the term ‘Americanization’ to make sense of the astonishing rise of the USA to the status of a world power. More specifically, they used this term to describe the social changes brought about by industrialization and urbanization. In this context, European intellectuals have often used ‘America’ as shorthand for ‘modernity’; across the Atlan…

  • Blood and Homeland: Eugenics and Racial Nationalism in Central and Southeast Europe, 1900-1940

Margit Berner, Ian Dowbiggin et al.•BOOK•Blood and Homeland•2006

The history of eugenics and racial nationalism in Central and Southeast Europe is a neglected topic of analysis in contemporary scholarship. The 20 essays in this volume, written by distinguished scholars of eugenics and fascism alongside a new generation of scholars, excavate the hitherto unknown eugenics movements in Central and Southeast Europe, including Austria and Germany. Eugenics and racial nationalism are topics that have constantly been…
