  • Characterisation of pigments and technical features of Byzantine mural paintings from eastern Crete (Lassithi): A diachronic view of reds between the 8th and 16th centuries

Open Access•Yiğit Zafer Helvaci, Yiğit Zafer Helvacı et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2026

First analysis of pigments of Byzantine mural paintings from eastern Crete (8th – 16th c.). • Multi-analytical methodology for revealing the red pigment composition and utilization over time. • Dominance of red ochres; vermilion (cinnabar) more widespread than previously assumed. • Lime-based binder components identified; secco and mixed execution techniques. • Thermal and humidity-related degradation of red pigments diagnosed and documented. Cre…

  • Characterization of Coral Red Slips on Greek Attic Pottery

    Open Access•Marc Walton, M S WALTON et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2009•Cited by: 4•References: 11

Samples of red and black gloss from Greek Attic pottery of the late sixth to fifth centuries bc were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM and FIB/STEM). The focus of the study was the chemical and microstructural characterization of the red gloss that was first produced during this period. Two groupings of red gloss were revealed. One red was found to be compositionally similar to the black glosses (labelled ‘LCM coral red’). The othe…

  • Evaluation of Binder/Aggregate Ratios in Archaeological Lime Mortars With Carbonate Aggregate: A Comparative Assessment of Chemical, Mechanical and Microscopic Approaches

Open Access•Francesca Casadio, Giacomo Chiari et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2005•Cited by: 10•References: 9

This paper reports on the comparative evaluation of traditional and innovative methods for the investigation of mortar technology. Preliminary results of various approaches to determining the mix proportions in lime mortars with carbonate aggregate are presented. Quantitative analysis was tested on ad hoc prepared mortars of known composition containing carbonate aggregates of different origin (travertine and Bath limestone). Wet chemical methods…

  • Mineralogical and chemical composition of transport amphorae excavated at Locri Epizephiri (southern Italy)

Open Access•Marcella Barra Bagnasco, Antonella Casoli et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Heritage•2001•Cited by: 3•References: 13

  • Photoluminescence of the inorganic pigments Egyptian blue, Han blue and Han purple
