Cynicism and Transience in Reactions of Southern Blue Collar Workers to the Carter Energy Proposal
The purpose of this study was to measure the effect of President Carter's 1977 Energy proposals on the attitudes of Southern blue collar workers toward the reality of the energy crisis. A questionnaire was administered at different stages in the Carter presentations. The original cynicism toward the reality of the energy crisis decreased after the President's proposal but for some subjects this change of attitude was short-lived. The implications…
Effective and Inexpensive Method of Obtaining Attitude and Opinion Data from “Hard to Sample” Populations
A method using congruent, inexpensive, and immediately gratifying rewards was used to obtain quantifiable data on the attitudes and opinions of frequenters of white, working-class beer taverns in a Southern state. The results were compared, controlling for race, income, and occupation, with those of studies using the same items in differing locales, time frames, and collection methods. There was no evidence that the tavern setting introduced sign…
Faking Good” as a Problem in Comparative Studies of Heroin Addicts
The tendency for members of deviant groups to answer social attitude scales in a socially desirable direction was evaluated using a group of heroin addicts. Heroin addicts were first compared with a standard comparison group. Three groups were then formed: (1) a stress group, which was required to complete the forms, (2) a reward group, which was given cigarettes for completing the forms, and (3) a volunteer group, which was simply requested to c…

Note on Stress, Anxiety and Related Defenses in a Controlled Situation
4 highly trained, experienced aquanauts were placed in a situation which they knew in advance would be hazardous but presented dangers with which they were familiar. They were accustomed to psychological tests but had never been tested with the particular instrument used in this experiment (IPAT 8-Parallel Form Anxiety Battery). The test was given 15 min. prior to the beginning of the dive, and another form of the test with a high correlation val…
Negro and War Attitudes of the Same Persons Assessed at Three Points over a Thirty-Three Year Period
Because of recent events regarding the Viet Nam war and the Negro problem in America, 98 persons who had completed Thurstone-type attitude scales in 1935 and 1965 were re-surveyed in 1968. A high response rate (95%) was obtained. Negro attitudes remained stable over the 3- and 33-yr. periods ( 65.08 = .91, and 35.09 = .73). War attitudes, however, did not remain as stable ( 65.08 = .56, and 35.08 = .27), because of shifts to neutral positions ove…
