Rethinking Subalterns, Archives and Histories in the Present: A roundtable
No description supplied
Genealogies of Enslavement and Convictism: Family Histories and Their Legacies in Barbados, Mauritius, and Australia
This roundtable places academics and family historians together in research and dialogue to co-produce and publish shared knowledge about the past. Focusing on Britain’s penal transportation of enslaved, or formerly enslaved, peoples in the past and the aftermaths of these histories now, we highlight negotiations of history, experiences, and identities in writing about the British empire and its legacies

Franciscan Prophets and the Inquisition (1226-1326)
This paper examines how Franciscan apologetics and polemics over the status of St. Francis and the Rule of 1223 created a climate of inquisitorial suspicion over prophecy and prophetic claims

Apartheid South Africa: Destroyer of the New World Order
Apartheid South Africa. Its very existence, especially coming on the heels of Nazi Germany’s defeat, was beyond jarring. It was as if the war accomplished little in transforming a brutal old world order into one more rights-based and racially egalitarian. For the United States, determined to woo newly independent nations into the West’s Cold War camp, the white supremacist regime in South Africa posed a serious problem. Pretoria played a key role…

Cluster Abstract Though historians have long imagined it as a world both unto itself and integral to histories of global capital, nation‐building, imperial rivalry, and sustainability in many dimensions, the Indian Ocean and environs have become a preoccupation for scholars from a wide variety of locations, disciplinary, and institutional, in the last two decades. The essays in this cluster offer a thematic introduction to recent work in Indian O…
Subaltern Lives: History, Identity and Memory in the Indian Ocean World
In this paper, I will explore some of the methodological challenges of writing subaltern histories of the Indian Ocean. I will argue that the intense mobility that underpinned society and social transformation on water, land, littoral and river rendered subaltern peoples targets of colonial management and surveillance, within and across European empires. Though productive of a rich disciplinary archive, that archive is scattered across cities, st…

Writing Indigenous Women's Lives in the Bay of Bengal: Cultures of Empire in the Andaman Islands, 1789-1906
This article explores the lives of two Andamanese women, both of whom the British called “Tospy.” The first part of the article takes an indigenous and gendered perspective on early British colonization of the Andamans in the 1860s, and through the experiences of a woman called Topsy stresses the sexual violence that underpinned colonial settlement as well as the British reliance on women as cultural interlocutors. Second, the article discusses c…
Avoiding the “usual suspects”: Young people's views of the National DNA Database
The aim of this project was to explore the views of young people, in particular those whose details are held on the National DNA Database (NDNAD), about some of the social and ethical issues surrounding the NDNAD. Ten focus groups revealed the majority of participants supported a universal DNA database; many thought taking a DNA sample should depend on the seriousness of the crime rather than the age of the person and that profiles of innocent pe…

Mandated lowering of toxicants in cigarette smoke: A description of the World Health Organization TobReg proposal
Preventing initiation of tobacco product use, promoting cessation of tobacco use, and protecting the public from exposure to second hand smoke are recognised by the World Health organization (WHO) Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) and by the WHO Study Group on Tobacco Product Regulation (TobReg) as the most effective approaches to reducing tobacco related morbidity and mortality. However, the FCTC also recognises the need for tobacco…
The Politics of Punishment in Colonial Mauritius, 1766–1887
The history of imprisonment in British colonial Mauritius is intertwined with its political economy, most especially the relationship between metropolitan government and plantation owners. Whether labour was predominantly enslaved, apprenticed or indentured, incarceration was part of a broader process through which the regulation of the colonial workforce was taken from the private to the public sphere and became associated with economic developm…
Maternal caregiving strain as a mediator in the relationship between child and mother mental health problems
This study examined whether the general stress-caregiver strain-mental health outcome model may be as appropriate for caregivers of minor-age children as it has been for caregivers of adults with chronic illness. The authors examined whether children's behavioral problems are related to mothers' caregiving strains, which then is related to greater maternal mental health symptomatology. Mothers of 222 children referred for mental health services c…
Fashioning Identities: Convict Dress in Colonial South and Southeast Asia
This article explores the issue of clothing in India's penal settlements. From the late eighteenth to the mid twentieth centuries, the British transported tens of thousands of Indian convicts overseas to penal settlements in Southeast Asia, Mauritius and the Andaman Islands. Removed from their supposedly criminal networks and put to work, convict offenders were apparently rehabilitated whilst conveniently satisfying colonial labour demands. The o…
Patterns of adolescent smoking initiation rates by ethnicity and sex
Different patterns of increasing and decreasing smoking initiation among sex and ethnic adolescent groups suggest the effect of varying social and cultural influences. These findings support the importance of including ethnic factors in studies of smoking behaviour

Fluorochrome labelling in roman period skeletons from dakhleh oasis, Egypt
A histological aging study of femoral midshafts in a late Roman period sample from the Dakhleh Oasis, Egypt, showed discrete fluorochrome labelling. The fluorochome is yellow‐green in colour and fluoresces at a wavelength of 525 nm. The labelling occurs at the mineralization fronts and is so distinct that several histomorphometric measurements were made. The percent labelled surface values ranged from 6.03% to 59.34%, and the mean distance betwee…

In such cases, the adolescent stimuli are not as reliable a guide to ovulation and adult males select adolescents as matiny partners much less often than they select adult females, however, despite the stimuli. We attempt to discover what factors correlate with the development oE supra-normal stimuli…
