    Open Access•Diane Barthel-Bouchier, Diane Barthel‐bouchier•ARTICLE•Cultural Sociology•2012•Cited by: 4•References: 21

While the dominance of the Hollywood major studios in the global film market is a well-known fact, less is known about the patterns of exportability by film genre and by nation. Here I present data pertaining to cross-national comparisons between France and the United States, as well as relevant global market figures for US films by genre. The findings challenge the assumption that specific genres, notably comedy, do not export. Rather, it appear…

  • The French Campaign for Improved Road Safety: State Power, Public Policy, and Regimes of Justification

    Diane Barthel-Bouchier, Diane Barthel‐bouchier•ARTICLE•Modern & Contemporary France•2008•References: 10

In reaction against Bourdieu's state-centered analysis of power, theorists associated with the ‘Groupe de sociologie morale’ argue that non-state actors exercise considerable agency. In so doing, these actors draw upon ‘regimes of justification’ to formulate and defend moral schemes of action. The Mondavi company was already installed nearby in Montpellier as a purchaser of wines to be incorporated into i…

  • Authenticity and Identity: Theme-parking the Amanas

    Open Access•Diane Barthel-Bouchier, Diane Barthel‐bouchier•ARTICLE•International Sociology•2001•Cited by: 7•References: 7

Many scholars see the tourist as engaged in a search for authenticity, a managed effect which tourist sites strive to produce in convincing forms and formats. This intellectual concern is reflected in the current debate over heritage, in which questions are raised as to exactly how far historic sites can and should try to achieve historical authenticity. Much of this discourse, however, seems strangely detached from social structures relating to …

  • Relocating the Tourist

    Open Access•Nelson H H Graburn, Nelson Graburn et al.•ARTICLE•International Sociology•2001•Cited by: 5•References: 25

This article traces the arrival and the subsequent debates about the place of the tourist in sociology. The sociology of tourists first focused on their economic, and then their physical and sociocultural impacts, in the stereotypical case of mass tourists of the metropolis visiting historical and peripheral locations. More recently, Graburn and Smith differentiated tourists by class, gender and lifestyle, and then by national origin. Tourism has…
