Nordic rock art and Nazi mythology
Following its formation in 1935, the Nazi German think-tank, the Ahnenerbe, launched numerous archaeological investigations, including two expeditions to create detailed casts of Swedish rock art. Previous scholarship has emphasised the pseudoscientific claims made by Ahnenerbe scholars and the racist motivations behind the fieldwork, yet the casts and other documentation from these early expeditions have not been analysed in detail. This article…
ISBN 9789170614293.
Energy Efficiency and Socio-Cultural Values in Public Policy in the City of Stockholm
Cities face increasing challenges in reducing their impact on climate change while also preserving their cultural heritage, both older and more modern. This paper investigates the articulations of energy efficiency and cultural values in local public policies of the City of Stockholm. The municipality is particularly interesting in its self-imposed role as being world-leading in the climate transition. However, we argue that the city fails in und…
Threat assessments and heritage in the age of hybrid warfare
In Sweden, civil and military defence is scaling up in response to a perceived increased threat caused by a deteriorated security and geopolitical situation in Europe over the last decade. This defence includes the planning for how to protect heritage in case of conflict on Swedish territory. Part of this planning is based on assessments of the types of threat that heritage in Sweden could face. By combining methods from intelligence studies with…
Protecting the cultural property of religious communities during war
Even though places of worship are protected by the Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict, they often become targets. To safeguard the cultural property of religious communities, it is necessary to plan for wartime protection under peaceful conditions, but studies of how this planning was conducted after 1945 are largely missing. This Article compares how the cultural property of the Church of Swed…
The Implementation of Conservation Policy and the Application of Solar Energy Technology in Small House Areas
This paper investigates the dynamic between protection of the historic environment and the application of solar energy technology on 1- or 2-family houses in Sweden. More specifically, the building code relating to the installation of photovoltaic (PV) panels on house roofs and how existing policies are implemented in Stockholm City is investigated in order to better understand the challenges in reconciling renewables and the conservation of buil…
The protection of movable cultural property in wartime
Modern warfare has prompted states to protect collections of cultural property by evacuating them to safe locations at times of war. Building on previously classified documents in archives, inquiries and other sources, this article investigates how planning for such evacuation was carried out in Sweden from 1939 to the 1990s. After the end of the Cold War, existing evacuation plans were finally scrapped. Due to the worsening security situation in…
The Second World War and the Protection of Saint George and the Dragon in Storkyrkan, Stockholm
When the Second World War broke out states, even neutral ones such as Sweden, sought to protect parts of their cultural property from destruction. This article deals with why and how some treasures belonging to the Church of Sweden were identified and selected for protection against air raids in the Second World War. On his own suggestion the art historian Johnny Roosval was given the task by the National Heritage Board (Riksantikvarieämbetet) to…
Decision-Making on a National Home Improvement Programme in Sweden and Its Effects on the Built Environment, 1984–1993
Following a period of unprecedented building in the 1960s and 1970s, the national government of Sweden decided on a programme to promote renovations, refurbishments and extension of older buildings. The programme (abbreviated R.O.T.) was introduced in 1984 and consisted of loans and subsidies for the modernisation of houses older than 30 years, as well as information to home owners and builders on the benefits of home improvement. The target was …
A Legacy of Energy Saving
The paper analyses the ‘energy savings plan for existing buildings’ (EBB) introduced in Sweden after the first oil crisis of 1973, and how effects of policies on the built heritage were perceived and communicated to a wider public. A conflict between conservation aims and energy efficiency was constructed for the first time in Sweden. The programme was a huge investment made by the government to reduce the import of oil. At first, little consider…
Funder and facilitator
The paper investigates the relationship between the Swedish development agency Sida and Cultural Heritage without Borders (CHwB), a facilitating organisation in the field of cultural heritage in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) following the Bosnia War. From 1995 to 2008 CHwB was the only NGO in BiH working to preserve cultural heritage, and was almost exclusively funded by Sida. From having been an organisation focusing on the restoration of histori…
Heritage under attack
Although attacks on cultural property have caused international outcry, our understanding of this phenomenon is still limited. In particular, little research has been directed towards exploring the motivations for such attacks. Therefore, we ask: What are the motives for attacking sites, buildings or objects representing cultural heritage? By combining insights from peace and conflict research with findings from heritage studies we present a typo…
Indoor Climate and Thermal Comfort from a Long-Term Perspective
This article discusses how a Swedish wooden burgher house, the mid-1660s Burmeister House, was adapted over the course of 250 years to satisfy ever-changing expectations of thermal comfort. The investigation is based on the climatic conditions of the Nordic Region, where the issue of thermal comfort is crucial when attempting to understand the development of indoor environments. The article explores how spatiality, heating, and interior decor and…
