Children’s Drawings as Evidence of Emerging Spatial Understanding in Chilean Kindergartens
This study analyses children’s drawings and verbal expressions as evidence of emerging spatial understanding in early childhood. Children aged 5–6 years from five Chilean kindergartens participated in multimodal activities, in which they depicted the flight of a mosquito through storytelling, movement imitation, and drawing. A case study examines the drawings ( n = 137) and the accompanying educator-recorded verbal explanations using content anal…
Mathematical Thinking Styles—The Advantage of Analytic Thinkers When Learning Mathematics
School is a space where learning mathematics should be accompanied by the student’s preferences; however, its valuation in the classroom is not necessarily the same. From a quantitative approach, we ask from the mathematical thinking styles (MTS) theory about the correlations between preferences of certain MTS and mathematical performance. For this, a valid test instrument and a sample of 275 16-year-old Chilean students were used to gain insight…
Mathematical knowledge and overall practice in initial teacher education of early childhood teachers
This paper presents an instrumental multiple-case study composed of two representative cases selected from a Mathematics Initial Teacher Education course. Data collected include concept maps, classroom observations, and interviews, which were analysed quantitatively and qualitatively. Differences in knowledge and practices were compared between pre-service early childhood teachers: one with greater content and pedagogical knowledge, and appropria…
