Oral History and the Holocaust in Slovakia
Images of the Non-Jewish Majority in the Memories of Holocaust Survivors
Slow Memory. Perspectives from Central and Eastern Europe. Introduction
Being “Local” in Eastern Slovakia
Focusing on coexistence in towns and villages of the former Šariš Zemplín County during World War II, our article exposes the shifting meanings assigned to belonging in what was a multiethnic borderland region and an economic periphery. Informed by works on community construction and meaning, we understand “locals” as being formed by diverse and at times conflicting social experiences that are nevertheless rooted in the same physical environment.…

Memory of the Communist Past as a Research Field
Introduction
This text focuses on qualitative research of the past when it comes to the communist regimes in Europe, particularly Slovakia (as part of former Czechoslovakia). The authors introduce the ongoing research project Current Images of the Socialism as well as its methodological and theoretical frames. They present the findings and challenges, as also articulated during the international conference Memory of the Communist Past (2020) and introduce sel…
The closer we are, The harder it gets
For the researcher, long-term qualitative investigation of a given subject matter represents an opportunity to acquire comprehensive knowledge of that subject matter in all of its dynamism and complexity. The author of this paper has been carrying out such research among Holocaust survivors, mainly employing the oral history method. This paper is an impressionistic story, a genre not commonly found in Slovak ethnological literature. It constitute…
Sociálna zmena v biografických naratívoch obyvateľov dnešného Slovenska. Od Mníchova po 14. marec 1939
This paper provides information about the social change that started in autumn 1938 and the way this historical period is reflected in the biographical narratives of witnesses of today's Slovak Republic. The author analysed oral histories from 200 interviews that focused on memories of the period from September 1938 (Munich Agreement) to March 1939 (establishment of the wartime Slovak State). She concentrated on two questions: 1. Which images, mo…
The Oral History Interview – A Relationship and Space of Trust
The oral history interview is a “multi-layered communicative event”. It is a unique, active event, reflective of a specific culture and of a particular time and space. Interviews, more precisely biographical interviews, are the tool I have been using for decades. The relationship between the interviewer and interviewee is, therefore, an essential question for me. I interview people to find out what happened to them, how they felt about it, how th…

Memories of the Holocaust
This study focuses on the way witnesses of historical events communicate their past experiences – how and what they choose to recall. By acknowledging the role of subjectivity in the recollections, it represents an addition to the existing body of predominantly historical works on the Holocaust in Slovakia. The study recognizes that subjectivity is present on the microlevel of every society and thus influences how witnesses remember historical ev…
The Year 1968 in the Memory of One Generation
The paper presents initial findings of research carried out among a same-age cohort (respondents born between the years 1938-1950) in the same town. The objective was to collect biographical narratives concerning the lives of the youth in the 1960s. The paper focuses on interpretations of respondents’ leisure time activities within a chosen urban area and their reflections on the invasion of the town on the part of occupation armies. *** Članek p…
