  • Pubertal timing and daily alcohol use in adulthood: Insights into the experiences of late maturers

Open Access•Donald P Kelly, James Dzera et al.•ARTICLE•Applied Developmental Science•2025

Pubertal timing has implications for adolescent substance use, such that early maturers have increased use. Yet, pubertal timing is not widely studied beyond adolescence, making it unclear whether and how adolescent effects persist or if downstream effects emerge after adolescence. This paper investigates the relation between pubertal timing (perceived comparison to same-sex peers) and alcohol use for 75-100 days and examines alcohol belief media…

  • Daily Gender and Cognition: A Person-Specific Behavioral Network Analysis

Adriene M Beltz, Donald P Kelly et al.•ARTICLE•Multivariate Behavioral Research•2024

Gender is person-specific, and it influences and is influenced by a breadth of multidimensional psychological factors, including cognition. Directionality is important for research on gender and cognition, as debate surrounds, for instance, whether masculine self-concepts precede spatial skills, or whether the reverse is true. In order to provide novel insights into the individualized nature of these relations, a person-specific network approach …

  • The daily association between affect and alcohol use: A meta-analysis of individual participant data

    Open Access•Jonas Dora, Marilyn Piccirillo et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•2023•Cited by: 6•References: 5

Influential psychological theories hypothesize that people consume alcohol in response to the experience of both negative and positive emotions. Despite two decades of daily diary and ecological momentary assessment research, it remains unclear whether people consume more alcohol on days they experience higher negative and positive affect in everyday life. In this preregistered meta-analysis, we synthesized the evidence for these daily associatio…

  • The Necessity of Thinking Historically – Heidegger After Nietzsche

Donald P Kelly, Dominic Kelly•ARTICLE•Journal of the British Society…•2020•References: 2

This paper is concerned with the turning that occurs within the work of Martin Heidegger. In particular it seeks to reveal it as a turning that takes place within the notion of history as it is elaborated by Heidegger in the difference between Nietzsche and Hölderlin, that is, in the difference between philosophy and poetizing. It locates the necessity for such a turning in Heidegger's dissatisfaction with his own thinking up to the early 1930s (…

  • But Nice Girls Don't Get It: Women, Symbolic Capital, and the Social Construction of Aids

    Open Access•Kathleen A Grove, Donald P Kelly et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary Ethnography•1997•Cited by: 12•References: 3

This ethnographic study analyzes the experiences of a group of women who are HIV-seropositive and possess one or more signs of socially respected symbolic capital: they are White, heterosexual, married, and/or middle class. Symbolic capital translates into social power and allows these women to control disclosure of their HIV status. Even when they reveal their HIV status, symbolic capital allows them to remain "nice girls" in the eyes of others.…
