America on the World Stage
This issue of the OAH Magazine of History marks the launching of an exciting new essay series, “America on the World Stage,” conceived and overseen by the OAH-Advanced Placement Joint Advisory Board on Teaching the U.S. History Survey. Aimed at helping secondary and college-level instructors in the design and substance of the United States history course, essays in this series will take up the challenge posed by the OAH's LaPietra Report (2000; )…
Kennedy versus Lodge
In his foreword to Thomas J. Whalen's Kennedy versus Lodge, Robert Dallek predicts that the book will “stand as the definitive study” of its subject. He may be right. Few books are written on individual Senate elections, and Whalen has effectively mined the appropriate primary sources and has told the story of the campaign well. On the other hand, much of the narrative is neither new nor much more informative than other, briefer treatments of the…
Eisenhower
Seeing Red
With most of the valuable and revealing sources on political issues during the Eisenhower years having been available for several years, the conventional wisdom concerning the thirty-fourth president has become fairly well established. Interpretations that were considered revisionist ten or fifteen years ago now command wide acceptance from historians who write about Eisenhower. That he was a strong leader in the White House (strong enough, indee…

Democrats, Civil Rights, and Electoral Strategies in the 1950s
In the 1950s and 1960s, civil rights emerged as an important partisan issue, influencing electoral strategies both between and within the two major parties. The issue particularly affected Democrats, since both blacks and southern whites were included in the party’s voter base. This paper examines the shifting approaches taken by Democratic party leaders in the critical years 1952-1960, as they attempted to build a winning electoral coalition. In…

The Odyssey of the American Right
Divisions and Dissent
Despite growing attention to the presidency of Dwight D. Eisenhower, a number of common assumptions about politics in the 1950s remain unexamined. One such assumption is that bipartisanship in foreign policy, though badly shaken at the end of the Truman administration, was restored under Eisenhower and prevailed throughout most of his two terms. Democrats, it has often been argued, supported Eisenhower more strongly in foreign policy than did his…
