The Transnational Politics of U.S. Immigration Policy
Marc R. RosenblumLa Jolla, Center for Comparative Immigration Studies, 2004
El Rey del Tomate Migrant Political Transnationalism and Democratization in Mexico
The highly publicized transnational political campaign of Andrés Bermúdez, who ran for mayor of Jerez, Zacatecas, is considered in terms of a continuum of theoretical frameworks on democratic theory and practice. Grounded in intensive qualitative interviews with key participants in the campaign, the study addresses the following questions: To what extent does the Bermúdez candidacy contribute to opening up the Mexican political system to the elec…

As we witness the striking resurgence of ethno-nationalist populism in the United States and across Europe, this volume exploring state practices and processes related to citizenship and belonging
Migrating into Financial Markets How Remittances Became a Development Tool
We understand very little about the billions of dollars that flow throughout the world from migrants back to their home countries. In this rigorous and illuminating work, Matt Bakker, an economic sociologist, examines how these migrant remittances—the resources of some of the world’s least affluent people—have come to be seen in recent years as a fundamental contributor to development in the migrant?sending states of the global south. This book a…
Discursive representations and policy mobility
In this article, I focus on two sets of practices that researchers and policy advocates carry out within international organizations and think tanks promoting what I term the remittances-to-development (R-2-D) agenda. Their work conjured up, elaborated and diffused a representation of remittances as a financial flow and made remittances visible as a promising source of development finance for the global South. First, there is the work of discursi…

Citizenship across Borders
Michael Peter Smith and Matt Bakker spent five years carrying out ethnographic field research in multiple communities in the Mexican states of Zacatecas and Guanajuato and various cities in California, particularly metropolitan Los Angeles. Combining the information they gathered there with political-economic and institutional analysis, the five extended case studies in Citizenship across Borders offer a new way of looking at the emergent dynamic…
Mexican migration, transnationalism, and the re-scaling of citizenship in North America
This article contributes to recent scholarship on the relationship between globalization, human mobility and citizenship rights. The article focuses empirically on the Mexican state's efforts at revamping, promoting and gaining recognition within the United States for a high security consular identification card in the period since 11 September 2001. These efforts are situated within the context of Mexico's broader extra-territorial nation-buildi…
The transnational politics of the Tomato King
In this article we deploy transnational ethnography to explore the transnational electoral politics by which Andrés Bermúdez, a successful tomato grower and labour contractor from Winters, California, who came to be called ‘the Tomato King’, was elected mayor of the municipality of Jerez in the Mexican state of Zacatecas. We seek to explain the meaning of his transnational electoral victory and its impact on the role of ‘the migrant’ as a new soc…
