The Constitutional Foundations of White Supremacy
The United States federal system reserved most powers regarding race and rights to the states, and the states constructed and maintained the legal foundations of White Supremacy in their constitutions. We propose a conceptual typology of four overlapping types of White Supremacy Constitutionalism: Enslavement provisions protecting the institution of slavery; “Race-Neutral” provisions, which appear colorblind but have racially discriminatory inten…
Teaching Social Movements with a Sustained Simulation of Police–Protester Contention
This case study reviews a social movement course that centered on a 10-week simulation of a contemporary contentious event in Washington, DC, involving six movement organizations and four police agencies. To our knowledge, it is the first classroom simulation of a Trump-era police–protester contentious episode or of any political science simulation that places an episode of insurrection in the contemporary United States. Three goals animated this…
Our Future at Risk
For the first time since 1860, our collective future as an ideologically coherent and nominally democratic nation is at risk. In the short, medium, and long term, our nation faces several systemic and intertwined threats. Because these cascading crises threaten our fundamental political ideals and our lives, we recommend here a rapid and careful reorientation of at least some part of American political development (APD) toward a scholarship of fo…

The American State & the Management of Race Conflict in the Workplace & in the Army, 1941-1945
The American mobilization for World War II produced widespread interracial conflict in factories in the urban north and in army camps in the rural south. In responding to racial friction, this article shows, the Roosevelt Administration was guided more by concerns for the war effort, tempered by local and party coalitional concerns, than by the goal of interracial reform. This strategy, the author concludes, successfully defused the racial crisis…
