  • Not a steamroller, a 3D process: Scientization at the Bank of England

Open Access•Aurélien Goutsmedt, Francesco Sergi et al.•ARTICLE•Finance and Society•2025•References: 31

This article investigates the scientization process in central banks, using the Bank of England (BoE) as a case study. Its main goal is to clarify the interactions and tensions among three dimensions of scientization: contributory, policymaking and legitimizing. To do so, we outline an ideal type of contributory scientization in central banks, whereby they become active contributors to science. The article derives empirically observable character…

  • Redefining scientization: Central banks between science and politics

    Open Access•Aurélien Goutsmedt, Francesco Sergi•ARTICLE•Finance and Society•2025•Cited by: 2•References: 72

This article introduces a new conceptual framework for examining the transformation of central banks' activities at the intersection of science and politics. It builds on the results of the contributions gathered in this special section on the scientization of central banking, to which this article also provides an introduction. We start with an analysis of Martin Marcussen's concept of 'scientization', originally formulated to describe the chang…

  • Perry Mehrling, The Money and the Empire

    Open Access•Francesco Sergi•ARTICLE•OEconomia•2024•References: 3

Perry Mehrling’s last book The Money and the Empire is an intellectual biography of Charles P. Kindleberger. Although the initial project was to write a “biography of the dollar” (ix), the proximity between the original intent and the resulting book is no mystery: the life, career, and intellectual contribution of Kindleberger, spanning from the late 1920s to the early 2000s, would provide the narrative thread to a book about the architecture of …

  • Six Decades of Economic Research at the Bank of England

Juan Acosta, Béatrice Cherrier et al.•ARTICLE•History of Political Economy•2024•Cited by: 5•References: 40

This paper discusses the transformation of the content, role, and status of economic research at the Bank of England in the past sixty years. We show how three factors (the policy functions and missions of the Bank, the attitude of its executives toward economics, and its organizational structure) shaped the evolution of in-house economic research at the Bank during three distinctive periods (1960-91; 1992-2007; 2007-14). Our account relies on a …

  • Write Your Model Almost as You Would on Paper and Dynare Will Take Care of the Rest!” A History of the Dynare Software

Open Access•Béatrice Cherrier, Aurélien Saïdi et al.•ARTICLE•OEconomia•2023

According to its creator Michel Juillard, Dynare is a “pre-processor and a collection of routines” aimed at solving and estimating non-linear rational expectation models. This article focuses on the role of Dynare in the dissemination of dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) models in academia and policymaking institutions. The case of Dynare highlights how the dissemination across the profession of theoretical principles and modelling pr…

  • Computer Operators and Software Engineers at Data Resources Inc

Open Access•Pedro Garcia Duarte, Francesco Sergi•ARTICLE•OEconomia•2023

This article illustrates how computers and software were pivotal for the commercial success of Data Resources Inc. (DRI), one of the main econometric private companies in the US during the 1970s and 1980s. DRI was established in 1968 and it was directed until 1984 by Harvard economist Otto E. Eckstein. Relying on his academic and government networks, Eckstein was able to build a large-scale macroeconometric model for DRI, which produced economic …

  • The Computerization of Economics: Three Lessons for Economics

    Open Access•Marcel Boumans, Cléo Chassonnery-Zaïgouche et al.•ARTICLE•OEconomia•2023•References: 8

In 1994, the Journal of Economic Perspectives published an article by William Goffe titled “Computer Network Resources for Economists”, starting with the statement: “[t]he Internet, the large and very rapidly expanding computer network, is revolutionizing research” (Goffe, 1994, 97). Goffe’s article aimed at providing the first “guide” for economists to understand the principles and mechanisms behind the functioning of the Internet, and it showca…

  • Lawrence E. Boland, Equilibrium Models in Economics. Purposes and Critical Limitations

    Open Access•Francesco Sergi•ARTICLE•OEconomia•2020

Equilibrium Models in Economics addresses the limitations of “equilibrium models”, i.e. economics models, in which “equilibrium is a central organising idea” (the quote is from Frank Hahn; 1). Lawrence Boland’s discussion of equilibrium models focuses on the “attainment” of equilibrium: How does a model move from out-of-equilibrium (or “disequilibrium”) positions toward equilibrium? The book starts with an assessment of the “standard textbook equ…

  • The Standard Narrative about DSGE Models in Central Banks’ Technical Reports

Francesco Sergi•ARTICLE•European Journal of the History…•2020

Historians of macroeconomics, through the analysis of articles in peer-review journals, pointed out macroeconomists’ propensity to elaborate narratives about the history of their discipline. This article extends the analysis of self-produced narratives to a different genre of literature—namely technical reports on DSGE models published by central banks and other policy-making institutions. This literature adopts a narrative displaying two distinc…

  • An Agenda without a Plan. Robert E. Lucas’s Trajectory through the Public Debate

Open Access•Aurélien Goutsmedt, Danielle Guizzo et al.•ARTICLE•OEconomia•2019•References: 9

This article explores Robert E. Lucas’s policy agenda and his engagement with the public debate between the 1970s and early 1980s. It investigates how he interacted with the public debate by envisioning key principles of his macroeconomic theory and methodology, and how he promoted his policy agenda. An exploration of Lucas’s personal and professional archives sheds light on his participation in policy debates after the publication of his works, …

  • Amanar Akhabbar, Wassily Leontief et la science économique

    Open Access•Francesco Sergi•ARTICLE•OEconomia•2019•References: 2

How should economists connect economic theories with observation and measurement? Amanar Akhabbar’s book Wassily Leontief et la science économique investigates one specific view about this fundamental issue. The narrative thread of the book is Leontief’s work and his views on the methodology and epistemology of economics: a 50-year long constant call for (and practice of) a closer articulation between measurement and theory. For Leontief, Akhabba…

  • Reacting to the Lucas Critique

    Aurélien Goutsmedt, Erich Pinzón-Fuchs et al.•ARTICLE•History of Political Economy•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 36

In 1976, Robert Lucas explicitly criticized Keynesian macroeconometric models for their inability to correctly predict the effects of alternative economic policies. Today, most contemporary macroeconomists and some historians of economics consider that Lucas's critique led forcefully to an immediate disqualification of the Keynesian macroeconometric approach. This narrative is based on the interpretation of the Lucas critique as a fundamental pri…

  • A Review (and a Comment) on Michel De Vroey’s History of Macroeconomics

    Open Access•Francesco Sergi•ARTICLE•OEconomia•2016

A History of Macroeconomics from Keynes to Lucas and Beyond is an ambitious book. First (and obviously), because the scope of the book is to address the evolution of modern macroeconomic theory from John Maynard Keynes’s General Theory to Michael Woodford’s Interest and Prices (2003), which involves investigating a seventy-year history of intricate debates, involving several dimensions (theory, methodology, policy) and hundreds of heterogeneous c…

  • Rebuilding “Time to Build”: A History of the Real Business Cycle Models

    Open Access•Francesco Sergi•ARTICLE•OEconomia•2015•References: 5

In his article “Present at the creation: Reflections on the 2004 Nobel Prize to Finn Kydland and Edward Prescott”, Robert Lucas wonders: I look back on this paper [“Time to Build and Aggregate Fluctuations”] with amazement: “How did [Kydland and Prescott] even think to put all these pieces together in just this way?” (Lucas, 2005, 777) Warren Young’s book Real Business Cycle Models in Economics is an excellent attempt to answer this question from…
