The “Official Opponent”? Wassily Leontief’s Idea of Econometric Methods
Several recent works have explored Wassily Leontief’s distinction between standard econometrics, which he called “indirect statistical inference,” and a “direct induction” he called “direct observation.” These works usually understand Leontief’s direct induction through the lens of input-output analysis. I argue that this is too narrow a perspective. Instead, I show how this distinction stemmed from Leontief’s (1929, 1932a) econometric work, when…
Facts to Defend American Democracy: Willford Isbell King's National Income Estimates and the Beginnings of the NBER
The desire to place public opinion on a rational footing through the production and communication of objective, impartial information fostered the development of statistical estimates of national income in the 1910s and 1920s. This article explores the case of Willford I. King, who made notable contributions to income estimation and was hired by Wesley C. Mitchell in 1920 at the founding of the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). King's …
The Case against "Indirect" Statistical Inference
How to infer from uncontrolled data the numerical values of the parameters of an econometric model? In interwar econometrics, this problem of statistical induction was tackled in various ways. Wassily Leontief's inter-industry method offers a case study of a nonprobabilistic approach to this problem of the statistical determination of a model's parameters. Leontief was an outspoken critic of the probabilistic approach to econometrics and presente…
Studying the Balance of the National Economy: An Introduction (A Translation)
This chapter offers the first full translation from Russian to English of the Balance of the National Economy of the USSR, 1924–26’s first chapter. Involving 12 authors and composed of 21 chapters, the Balance is a collective work published in June 1926 in Moscow by the Soviet Central Statistical Administration under the scientific supervision of its former director, Pavel Illich Popov (1872–1950). In this first chapter, titled ‘Studying the Bala…
Statistical Economic Balances in Unbalanced Times. The Balance of the National Economy of the USSR, 1923 – 24: Pavel Illich Popov’s Contribution
This chapter provides a presentation about Chapter 1 of The Balance of the National Economy, 1923–24, edited by Pavel Illich Popov. The Balance was issued in June 1926 by the Central Statistical Administration (CSU or TsSU) of the USSR, which Popov had headed from July 1918 to January 1926. In the first part of our chapter, we show how Popov’s work on the balance of the national economy was rooted in the specific scientific and political culture …
Russian Political Economy from Utopia to Social Engineering: An Introduction
Utopias [are to be] set alongside the constructions of engineers, and one might with full justice call them constructions of social engineers...Utopias were relegated to the history of economic theory, whereas they belong to the theory itself, just as the construction of new bridges and aeroplanes belong into the theory of civil or mechanical engineering. (Otto Neurath, 1919, 150-152) In September 2009, the editors of this special issue organized…
Input-Output in Europe: Trends in Research and Applications
L’histo…
