  • Exploring Policy Implications of Ethics of Care and Justice in Care Work and Human Services Organizations

Open Access•Christa J Moore, Patricia Gagné•ARTICLE•Journal of Applied Social Science•2021

Much attention has recently been focused on the efficacy of cross-sector collaboration within the field of human services in response to increasing rates of child maltreatment and subsequent foster care entries nationwide. Our research includes 200 hours of participant observation, in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 65 professionals broadly involved in the protection of vulnerable children and the support of their parents, and an analysis …

  • Commodification and Resistance: Theoretical Implications Drawn from a Mobile Recreational Community

    Open Access•D Mark Austin, Patricia Gagné•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary Ethnography•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 33

Drawing on interview, survey, and long-term participant observational research in the BMW motorcycling community, we analyze issues related to the commodification of riding. We use Hill-Collins's (1999) "both/and" approach in our data analysis. Specifically, we draw on Adorno's (1991) and Marcuse's (1964) theories of the commodification of popular culture and the power of the "culture industry" to market non-essential products. We find that Marx'…

  • Motives for and Personal and Social Benefits of Airplane Piloting as a Serious Leisure Activity for Women

    Open Access•Frances L Shupe, Patricia Gagné•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary Ethnography•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 29

Using the work of Freysinger (1995), Deci and Ryan (1985, 2000), and Stebbins (2007) as sensitizing concepts, we use analytic inductive methods to analyze interview data from twenty-six women who had experience as private pilots. Emergent from our data were themes showing that differences in motivations to learn to pilot were correlated with differing social benefits derived from flying. Moreover, our respondents discussed several personal and so…

  • Commodification and Popular Imagery of the Biker in American Culture: Commodification and Popular Imagery of the Biker in American Culture

  • Corporate Logo Tattoos and the Commodification of the Body

    Open Access•Angela Orend, Patricia Gagné•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary Ethnography•2009•Cited by: 7•References: 23

This research explores the sociological factors underlying the increasing popularity of corporate logo tattoos. The authors draw upon critical theory, sociology of the body, and consumption to analyze data from in-depth interviews with a small sample of subjects with a corporate logo tattoo. Findings suggest that the increasing popularity of logo tattoos is a product of the commodification of culture via the culture industry. Findings show that t…

  • Gendered Sexualities

    Open Access•Richard A Tewksbury, Patricia Gagné et al.•BOOK•Gendered sexualities•2005

Contemporary scholars have made important substantive and theoretical contributions to understanding the ways in which power is exercised through gender and through sexuality. Drawing upon a number of theoretical frameworks, including feminism, post-modernism, masculinities and queer theory, researchers have challenged dichotomous, static, and biologically reductionist conceptualizations of gender and sexuality. They have documented the myriad wa…

    Open Access•Patricia Gagné, Deanna Mcgaughey•ARTICLE•Gender & Society•2002•Cited by: 23•References: 10

This article draws on Foucault's concept of the exercise of power and Gramsci's concept of hegemony to examine how women used cosmetic surgery to exercise power over their bodies and lives. The analysis is rooted in two feminist perspectives on cosmetic surgery. The first argues that women who elect to have their bodies surgically altered are victims of false consciousness whose bodies are disciplined by the hegemonic male gaze. The second assert…

  • Battered Women's Justice: The Movement for Clemency and the Politics of Self-Defense

    Kathleen J Ferraro, Patricia Gagné•ARTICLE•Contemporary Sociology A Journal…•1999

Imagine a state where the governor opens his home as a shelter for battered women, feminists hold appointed positions and respond to leftwing and feminist constituencies, the First Lady spends time talking with women in prison, and the Corrections Department allows inmates to speak with journalists. Imagine the governor grants mass clemency to 26 women incarcerated for killing abusive partners. Is this a fantasy from a feminist utopian novel? No,…

  • Knowledge and Power, Body and Self: An Analysis of Knowledge Systems and the Transgendered Self

    Open Access•Patricia Gagné, Richard Tewksbury•ARTICLE•Sociological Quarterly•1999•Cited by: 11•References: 23

Symbolic interactionists have widely established the tenet that the self is formed in interaction with others. Despite this great contribution, this perspective has tended to sidestep discussions of the relationship between the body and the self and to overlook systems of power and the ways in which they impact upon the self and the body. The more recent contributions of postmodernists and critical theorists have focused on knowledge as a system …

  • Conformity Pressures and Gender Resistance among Transgendered Individuals

    Patricia Gagné, Richard Tewksbury•ARTICLE•Social Problems•1998•Cited by: 32•References: 7

Research on transgendered individuals has tended to come from medical, psychiatric, or deviance perspectives, with little attention to the social context in which these individuals exist or their efforts to resist normative expectations of sex and gender. Based upon in-depth interviews with 65 masculine-to-feminine transgendered individuals, this research examines gender as a social institution. Focusing on the pressures experienced by individual…

  • Coming Out and Crossing Over: Identity Formation and Proclamation in a Transgender Community

    Open Access•Patricia Gagné, Richard Tewksbury et al.•ARTICLE•Gender & Society•1997•Cited by: 52•References: 26

Drawing on data from interviews with 65 masculine-to-feminine transgenderists, the authors examine the coming-out experiences of transgendered individuals. Drawing on the literature that shows gender to be an inherent component of the social infrastructure that at an individual level is accomplished in interaction with others, they demonstrate that interactional challenges to gender are insufficient to challenge the system of gender. Whereas many…

  • Assumed and presumed identities: Problems of self-presentation in field research

    Richard Tewksbury, Patricia Gagné•ARTICLE•Sociological Spectrum•1997•Cited by: 6•References: 40

Understanding how qualitative researchers utilize and manage identities in the conduct of field research is a critical, yet underdeveloped, field of inquiry. This article explores the ways that qualitative researchers can facilitate their work through management of their presented identities. Central issues of establishing rapport and gaining trust, especially with stigmatized social groups, are examined in light of the authors’ experiences. Draw…

Drawing on post-modern, critical, and feminist critiques oftheories of liberal democracy, I expand the definition of activism and identify the strategy and tactics used by feminists in this mo…

  • Appalachian Women: Violence and Social Control

    Open Access•Patricia Gagné, Patricia L Gagné•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary Ethnography•1992•Cited by: 14•References: 3

The findings from case study research conducted in a small, rural central Appalachian community during the winter of 1987-1988 suggest that standard definitions of wife abuse obscure the elements of social control inherent in violent activities, while obviating the relationship between violence and other forms of social control. Three categories of control are developed. The first, normative control, refers to socially accepted ways in which wome…
