The rise and fall of French disequilibrium macroeconomics: The case of Jean-Pascal Bénassy (1948–2022)
We examine the contributions made by Jean-Pascal Bénassy (1948–2022) to disequilibrium macroeconomics from the mid-1970s to the early-1980s. To assess the achievements made by Bénassy during that period, we focus attention on the following issues: the technology of exchange and the place given to money, the design of effective demand functions and the framing of expectations, price dynamics and the process of price formation, and lastly the three…
“Peter Howitt’s Keynesian Recovery and Keynes: An assessment”
This article examines Peter Howitt’s contribution to non-Walrasian economics in relation to his account of Keynes’ theoretical apparatus as developed in his General Theory. We address the following issues: first, what was, according to Howitt, the central message in Keynes’ General Theory? Second, how does Howitt assess the Keynesian legacy, from the initial works by Patinkin related to multiple equilibria models through to the disequilibrium mac…
Introduction to Economists at War: How World War II Changed Economics (and Vice Versa)
The 2023 HOPE conference aimed to understand the interrelationships between the Second World War and economics. Examining this back-and-forth means examining the transformative effect of the war on the content and status of economics but also symmetrically examining the role played by economics and economists in the conduct of the Second World War
Lucas and Friedman: The Challenges of Rational Expectations-Based Monetary Cycles for Adaptive Expectations-Based Monetary Long Trends
The paper argues that Lucas (1972. ‘Expectations and the Neutrality of Money.’ Journal of Economic Theory 4 (2): 103–124) played a significant role in changing Friedman’s theoretical propositions of the 1970s, and that his restatement of Friedman’s (1968b. Dollars and Deficits. Inflation, Monetary Policy and the Balance of Payments. Englewood Cliffs: Prentice-Hall International) address on monetarism helped Friedman refine his argument, regarding…
The Penetration of Engineering by Economics: McFadden and the Transformation of Road Demand Estimation
The golden age of road demand modeling began in the 1950s and flourished in the 1960s in the face of major road construction needs. These macro models, as well as the econometrics and the data to be processed, were provided mainly by engineers. A division of tasks can be observed between the engineers in charge of estimating the flows within the network and the transport economists in charge of managing these flows once they are on the road netwo…
Reading Keynes’s Policy Papers Through the Prism of His Treatise on Probability: Information, Expectations, and Revision of Probabilities in Economic Policy
When scholars investigate the legacy of John Maynard Keynes’s Treatise on Probability (1921) for the development of Keynes’s thinking, the attention usually focuses on the connections among Keynes’s probability theory, his conception of decision-making under uncertainty, and the theory of the functioning of the macroeconomic system that derives from it—through the marginal efficiency of capital, the preference for liquidity, and the self-referent…
From “science as measurement” to “measurement and theory”: The Cowles Commission and contrasting empirical methodologies at the University of Chicago, 1943 to 1955
While located at the University of Chicago, the Cowles Commission for Research in Economics advanced a distinctive “Cowles Commission approach” to macroeconomic modelling, using maximum likelihood methods to estimate structurally-identified Keynesian simultaneous-equations models, with the methods presented in two Cowles monographs edited or co-edited by Tjalling Koopmans, a pioneering implementation in another Cowles monograph by Lawrence Klein,…
Macroeconomic statics and dynamics in a historical perspective
(2020). Macroeconomic statics and dynamics in a historical perspective. The European Journal of the History of Economic Thought: Vol. 27, Macroeconomic statics and dynamics in a historical perspective, pp. 471-475
Keynes’ treatment of dynamics and stability in a monetary economy: The role played by expectations from the Tract on Monetary Reform to the General Theory
Contrary to the commonly accepted view, Keynes’ static treatment of the effective demand principle in his General Theory should be considered more as an achievement than as an incomplete proof. The Tract investigated the fluctuations due to short-term forecasting errors. Next, the Treatise extended the analysis of expectations’ mismatches to the determination of the level of investment. Hence the major achievement of the General Theory can be loc…
