Variable associations of annual biomass increment with age, latitude and germination year in four tree species in Sweden
Forests are pivotal for biodiversity, food webs, and human economies, and as carbon sinks their climate change mitigation potential is undisputed. However, whether trees continue to efficiently accumulate biomass at an increasing rate with age, how growth trajectories respond to climate change, and vary with latitude at species range margins is under debate. Here, we combine tree-ring data with biometric equation modeling to analyze how annual bi…

Title in WoS: The Society of Singularities. About the Structural Change of Modernity
Normalizing Urban Entrepreneurialism Through Sly De-Politicization
Among a number of proposals regarding 'late' forms of urban neoliberalism, it has recently been argued that urban entreprenurialism has become 'common sense' or even 'dull compulsion'. In this article, we contribute to this discussion by exploring the structural conditions and local strategies for normalizing city-centre-oriented urban entrepreneurialism in a Swedish context. In doing so, we return to an important but sometimes overlooked aspect …

Varumärkets Kortslutning? - “Stockholm the Capital of Scandinavia”
THE SHORT-CIRCUITING OF A BRAND? - “STOCKHOLM – THE CAPITAL OF SCANDINAVIA”Ever since 2005 Stockholm has been promoted by a new brand: “Stockholm – the Capital of Scandinavia”. However, the question is whether a brand saying only that Stockholm is the number one city in Scandinavia really works. Before giving an answer to this question, the phenomenon of city branding is discussed in more general terms. This makes it possible to identify three wa…

Paradoxes of football professionalization in Sweden
The dismantling of the amateur rules of Swedish football in 1967 initiated the professionalization of the game in Sweden. This article analyses the impact and consequences of this development by using a comparative approach based on an examination of two clubs. The expected domination by Malmö FF in the new professionalized era is contrasted with the most unexpected success achieved by Hammarby IF. The paradoxical differences in the recent histor…
Understanding the Urban
A Weird Politics of Place
After World War II, central Stockholm was completely renewed; a new, modernist 'city' was designed, and a sunken plaza, Sergels torg, was laid out. Used by thousands daily, the square also became a centre for drug trafficking. Sergels torg fell into disrepute, which its periodic use for demonstrations and celebrations could not counteract. With a new local government in Stockholm in 1998, Sergels torg was unexpectedly set at the top of the agenda…
The Emergence of a Modern Youth Culture
This study traces the emergence of a modern youth culture in the 1930s in Sweden, thus challenging the view that it was born in the 1950s. Sweden, at that time, was a society at the crossroads; all over culture and society, modernity opposed what was given. The new youth culture is traced through a study offive popular cultural forms-boys' literature, particularly aviation books, girls' literature, sport, and national and US film, with a special …
Urban Order and the Preventive Restructuring of Space
This paper is about a specific aspect of the present restructuring of space: the cumulative, but unintended, effects on the public urban order, by a growing, and more intense, deployment of border controls. Border controls are recognized to operate both in public space, and at the entrances to those organized activities that directly face public space. Their working is understood as actuarial practices. Two preventive impetuses are identified, on…
Våldet och staden
Violence and the city. A critical assessment of Swedish criminologyViolence and urban life, particularly street violence, is currently a prominent public issue, of rising importance to various social sciences. Disciplinary, however, there is, traditionally, a double starting point here, one rooted in criminology, the other in urban sociology. Departing in a specific understanding of the urban order as a liminal space subjugated to several forms o…
