  • Imagining Women’s Archives of Silent Film Music

    Kendra Preston Leonard•ARTICLE•Feminist Media Histories•2024

Although women comprised the majority of American cinema accompanists during the silent film period (c. 1895–1927), few of their music libraries or compositions have survived, whereas collections created by male cinema musicians dominate the silent film music archives. Women musicians suggested, shaped, and helped define the musical tastes of the time; educated listeners; and showed how music could serve as a creative, narrative, and interpretati…

  • Reparations in Music Scholarship

    Kendra Preston Leonard•ARTICLE•American Music•2022

I just got finished writing a chapter on composer Julia Perry's 1960 piece Homunculus C.F., a serial minimalist work, for a collection called—as for now—Expanding the Canon: Black Composers in the Music Theory Classroom, edited by Melissa Hoag. Perry (1924–1979) was a Black, possibly queer, American composer whose works were influenced by Black American genres, Western European forms and harmonic languages, and serialism as taught by Luigi Dallap…

  • Musical Mimesis in Orphans of the Storm

    Open Access•Kendra Preston Leonard•ARTICLE•Music Theory Online•2018

In this essay I explore the use of musical mimesis in the score for D. W. Griffith’s 1921 film Orphans of the Storm . I demonstrate that the score, created by Louis F. Gottschalk and William Frederick Peters, offers coherence through the use of central themes and the employment of several characteristic leitmotivs; provides recognizable musical characterizations of emotions and physical phenomena, establishing a consistent mimetic aspect to the m…

  • The Art Songs of Louise Talma

Kendra Preston Leonard, Michael J Budds•BOOK•Art Songs of Louise Talma•2017

The Art Songs of Louise Talma presents some of Talma’s finest compositions and those most frequently performed during her life. It includes pieces appropriate for beginning, intermediate, and advanced singers and collaborative pianists. The songs include text settings of American, English, and French poets and writers, including Native American poems, works by W. H. Auden, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Emily Dickinson, e. e. cummings, John Donne, G…

  • Significations of Religious Desire in Louise Talma’s The Alcestiad

Kendra Preston Leonard•ARTICLE•Religion and the Arts•2013

American composer Louise Talma’s opera The Alcestiad can be read as a highly autobiographical work; its themes can be understood as crucial elements of Talma’s own life. These correlations include: the demands and restrictions of society upon women’s behavior and desires, particularly its emphasis upon conforming to heteronormative performance, represented by Alcestis’s hesitant acceptance of marriage and motherhood, and Talma’s reluctant career …
