The Oxford Handbook of Religion in Turkey
The Oxford Handbook of Religion in Turkey offers a comprehensive analysis of the ways religion is understood, experienced, and contested in contemporary Turkey. Since its foundation in 1923, the Republic of Turkey has had a complex and often misunderstood relationship with religion. The constitutional laïcité implemented by the Republic’s founders is unique in an Islamic context, and although most of the population identifies as Muslim, the state…
Wielding God's Power
Over the past 2 decades, the topic of Christian-Muslim relations has become one of the most talked-about issues in the world, and western Christian historical experiences and sources have usually dominated these discussions. Often overlooked is the fact that vast numbers of Eastern and Oriental Orthodox Christians and Muslims have continuously lived among one another from the beginning of Islam in the seventh century up to the present day. This a…

Māturīdī Theology
Despite its status as one of the great traditions of Sunni Islamic systematic theology, the Māturīdī school and its major texts have remained largely inaccessible to a Western audience. As the first reader of Māturīdī theology ever produced in a Western language, this volume meets an urgent need among scholars and general readers. It features selections ranging from the founder, Abū Manṣūr al-Māturīdī, to key texts from the broader Māturīdī tradi…

“Post-Gezi Islamic Theology
The legacy of the 2013 Gezi Park protests has been controversial and its impact on Turkish politics difficult to assess. At the same time, there has been little reflection on contemporary Islamic feminist thinking in English sources. This essay argues that one important political and intellectual legacy of the Gezi movement has been the development of certain intersectional discourses in Islamic feminism in Turkey, whereby the shared experience o…
The Universe in Flux
This article analyses key metaphysical and epistemological terms in Abū Manṣūr al-Māturīdī’s main theological work, Kitāb al-Tawḥīd , including his use of the terms natures ( ṭabāʾiʿ ), state ( ḥāl ) and aspect ( jiha or wajh ). It argues that Māturīdī works out a metaphysics of continuous flux ( taqallub ) in the created universe. This metaphysical scheme is based on Māturīdī’s epistemological analysis of aspects, and the ways in which reality c…

Christian Polemic and the Nature of the Sensual
This paper analyses major examples of some of the earliest Christian theological texts written in Arabic, authored within two centuries of the first Christian contact with Islam. These texts also comprise the first systematic Christian theological critiques of Islam written in Arabic. As with many later Christian polemical engagements with Islam, these texts attempt to associate Islam with violence and sensuality. This paper analyses this highly …
