Jung Among the Physicists
This essay reviews the recent book by Harald Atmanspacher and Dean Rickles, Dual‐Aspect Monism and the Deep Structure of Meaning . The essay aims to contextualize and clarify the book’s core argument about the theoretical and empirical fruitfulness of decompositional dual‐aspect monism as an intervention into the mind‐body problem that ascribes a pivotal role to meaning. The variants of dual‐aspect monism discussed were developed primarily by phy…

Panentheism and the Undoing of Disenchantment
In this article, I draw on historical and conceptual arguments to show, first, that disenchantment and the influential view of the relationship between science and religion to which disenchantment gives rise are rooted in the metaphysics of theism. I then introduce the alternative metaphysical position of panentheism and identify Jungian psychology as an important, if implicit, mid‐twentieth‐century instance of panentheistic thought. Using the ex…
The cultural significance of synchronicity for Jung and Pauli
This paper considers the cultural significance of C.G. Jung's concept of synchronicity, as this was envisaged both by Jung himself and by the physicist Wolfgang Pauli, Jung's most important discussant in developing the concept. For both thinkers the principle of synchronicity was, above all, an attempt to develop an expanded, more holistic understanding of science. The paper argues, however, that their motives for proposing this development were …
Secular and religious
In recent years a number of prominent social theorists, including Jürgen Habermas and Charles Taylor, have voiced concern about the hegemony of naturalistic, secular assumptions in the social sciences, and in their different ways have sought to address this by establishing greater parity between secular and religious perspectives. This paper suggests that C.G. Jung's analytical psychology, which hitherto has been largely ignored by social theory,…

Jung's uncertain separation of psychology from philosophy
Secularisation and the 'Holistic Milieu
In sociology of religion, there is an ongoing debate about whether alternative, holistic or New Age spirituality represents a significant resurgence of concern for the sacred in the West and, if so, whether it amounts to counter-evidence to the thesis that the West is undergoing an irreversible process of secularisation. In this article, I examine representative accounts of the contrasting views that New Age or holistic spirituality is not signif…
Psychology of Religion
The psychology of religion is a complex field involving a variety of approaches that have not always developed in clear relationship to one another. As an aid to orientation, this article aims to provide an overview of the history and current status of the psychology of religion. It discusses the early contexts and origins of psychology of religion; depth psychological approaches to religion, especially those of Freud and Jung; empirical approach…

The Social Significance of Synchronicity
Magic and science in the modern western tradition of the i ching
At various periods throughout the roughly two and a half millennia of its history in China, the I Ching or Book of Changes, while generally remaining grounded in a fundamentally spiritual world‐view, served as a foundational text for both magical and scientific thinking. This bivalence is reflected in some of the responses which this divinatory and philosophical system has received following its introduction to the West in the present century. Th…
