"The "Black Buddhism Plan: Buddhism, Race, and Empire in the Early Twentieth Century
This article traces the life of a single figure, Sufi Abdul Hamid, to bring into conversation the history of the transmission of Buddhism to the United States with the emergence of new Black religio-racial movements in the early twentieth century. It follows Hamid's activities in the 1930s to ask what Hamid's life reveals about the relationship between Buddhism and race in the United States. Buddhism and race in the United States
Buddhist Studies developed alongside the rise of racial sciences and the colonization of so-called "heathen" bodies, lands, and resources. Colonialism, race, and racialization have constituted the ways "real" Buddhism is positioned against "Other" Buddhisms. In this article, I provide an overview of scholarship on Buddhism and race in the United States. Racial whiteness has been constitutive of normative understandings of Buddhism. White normativ…
Ann Gleig. American Dharma: Buddhism beyond Modernity
American Dharma: Buddhism beyond Modernity opens with a description of the cover of the February 3, 2014, issue of Time magazine, which featured “a beautiful white blonde female, eyes closed, face tilted upwards, radiating joy and tranquility,” overlaid with the words “The Mindful Revolution: The Science of Finding Focus in a Stressed-Out, Multitasking Culture” (1). The cover encapsulates the main features of Buddhist modernism, with its focus on…
Being Buddha, Staying Woke: Racial Formation in Black Buddhist Writing
This article challenges academic explorations of Orientalism as an interaction between a white West and an Asian East within the context of American Buddhist communities. Taking as its focus twentieth-and twenty-first-century semiautobiographical writings by black American Buddhists, this article explores how black American Buddhists engage with Buddhist teachings to understand themselves as racialized subjects on local, national, and transnation…
Buddhism and Race
This chapter takes a step toward the theorization of discourses of race and racialization within the American Buddhist context. Far from being neutral observers, Buddhist Studies scholars have participated in the racialization of particular American Buddhisms. After mapping the landscape of key works on race, ethnicity, and American Buddhism, this chapter takes as a case study a collection of black Buddhist publications that reflect on race and e…
