  • Weeds in Milpa: Richness, Perception, and Their Traditional Uses and Knowledge

    Open Access•Beatriz Quiroz-González, Hugo M Ramírez-Tobias et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnobiology•2025

Weeds growing in Mesoamerican traditional maizefields, or milpas , represent a reserve of genetic resources and knowledge. To explore tendencies on the influence of natural and cultural attributes on milpa weeds and their knowledge, we studied species richness, perception, and use of adventitious plants in milpas across an agroclimatic and cultural gradient in Altiplano , Rioverde , and Huasteca milpas in the state of San Luis Potosi, México. The…

  • Ancestral Traditions of the Future: Where is traditional knowledge and practice preservation directed

Open Access•Andrew J Semotiuk, Andrew Semotiuk et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnobotany Research and…•2022

Background: Traditional knowledge and practice prevalence is on an overall decline. In this study, we examine preservation strategies reported in the literature, follow-up measures, and categories of traditional knowledge and conservation practices that are being attempted by non-profit organizations. Methods: To answer these questions, we reviewed the literature for keywords related to TKP preservation and also searched databases of organization…

  • On the Age and Growth Rate of Giant Cacti: Radiocarbon Dating of the Spines of Cardon ( Pachycereus Pringlei )

    Open Access•Mariana Delgado-Fernández, Pedro P Garcillán et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2016•References: 19

Age estimation has been a limiting factor in the study of giant columnar cacti. In order to test the feasibility of using radiocarbon methods to estimate the age of the giant cardon cacti ( Pachycereus pringlei ), we selected six sites spanning the latitudinal and precipitation range of the species in the Baja California peninsula. In each site, we selected four individuals of different heights and sampled a spine from the lowest areole in the st…

  • Transnational Ecosystem Services: The Potential of Habitat Conservation for Waterfowl Through Recreational Hunting Activities

    Nadia T Rubio-Cisneros, Nadia T Rubio‐Cisneros et al.•ARTICLE•Human Dimensions of Wildlife•2014

This article explores transnational ecosystem services in North America, provided by winter habitat for waterfowl in western Mexico coastal lagoons, and the hunting industry supported by these birds in the United States. This article shows that the number of waterfowl harvested in the United States is related to the abundance of waterfowl wintering in Mexico. On average, this flow of ecosystem services annually yields US$ 4.68 million in hunting …

The Cartographers of Life: Two Centuries of Mapping the Natural History of Baja California Pedro P. Garcillán, Charlotte E. González Abraham, and Exequiel Ezcurra In 1964, the outstanding biogeographer Leon Croizat published a book entitled Space, Time, Form: The Biological Synthesis. He never visited Baja California, but few places in the world can condense more deeply the powerful metaphor of Croizat's title. Indeed, biogeography has been for c…
