  • Lost in Transitions? Feudalism, Colonialism, and Egypt's Blocked Road to Capitalism (1800-1920)

Open Access•Jelle Versieren, Brecht De Smet•ARTICLE•Journal of Historical Sociology•2022•References: 52

We revisit the transition debate to capitalism through the historical case of nineteenth century Egypt and the theoretical lens of uneven and combined development. We argue that the twin concepts of formal and real subsumption of labor under capital offer a necessary methodological device to study capitalist transitions. We conclude that nineteenth century Egypt was not a society experiencing an 'indigenous' transition to capitalism that was bloc…

    Michiel T’Jampens, Jelle Versieren•ARTICLE•Critical Horizons•2020•References: 11

In “Il faut défendre la société”, Foucault attempted to historicize and criticize Nietzsche’s equating of the social with struggle. In order to do so, Foucault produced a descriptive discursive history of his genealogical project by deploying the method of the critical archaeology. Foucault realized thereinafter that his archaeological exposition of the genealogical discourse in fact laid bare a close historical and conceptual bond between geneal…

  • The Methodological Rationale of Thomas Sekine: Dialectical Escapes from Orthodoxies and the Marxian Political Economy

    Jelle Versieren•ARTICLE•Social Theory and Practice•2018

The unique conceptual status of Thomas Sekine’s approach to Marx’s Capital and capitalism, heavily indebted to Kōzō Uno’s work, will be analyzed by setting against its own theoretical counterparts, orthodox dialectical materialism. It will also be shown that Sekine’s critique of dialectical materialism differs from other neo-Hegelian perspectives or Althusser’s anti-Hegelian structuralism. These comparisons unearth Sekine’s concealed epistemologi…

  • The moral foundations of Adam Smith's transitional society: Reappraising Foucault's representations of wealth and Marx's reconstruction of value theory

    Open Access•Jelle Versieren•ARTICLE•Capital & Class•2016•References: 31

Foucault was preoccupied with Smith's alteration of the concept of labor as a unique representation of wealth. Smith, contrary to his contemporaries, posited labor as the determining sign that represents money and exchange and designates the economic existence of all signs of wealth. Foucault stated that Smith took the incipient step from the old science of wealth to the modern political economy. However, it is equally important to discern the fa…
