  • A New Project of a Gulf-Based Regional Order in the Middle East

Meliha Altunisik, Meliha Benli Altunışık•ARTICLE•The Middle East Journal•2025•References: 1

Since 2020, the regional politics of the Middle East have been characterized by a series of normalizations between former foes. In this article I argue that this era can be understood as an attempt to establish a new regional order, which I term the Gulf-based regional order. While this initiative introduces new security, economic, and ideational components, it faces significant challenges, making its long-term sustainability uncertain

  • The International from the perspectives of Gezi Protestors

Open Access•Derya Göçer Akder, Meliha Altunisik et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Historical Sociology•2018•References: 20

GeziProtests that started in Istanbul and spilled over to other cities in the Spring of 2013 has been regarded as an important episode of Turkish politics in the 21stcentury. Although it happened in congruous with protests movements in different localities in the world as well as significant transformations in Turkey's foreign policy, the question of the influence of the international in these protests has been largely unexplored. This paper pres…

  • Turkey’s Soft Power in a Comparative Context

Meliha Altunisik, Meliha Benli Altunışık•BOOK•Great Game in West Asia•2017

This chapter focuses on the soft power of Turkey, comparing its engagements with the states of the South Caucasus (and Central Asia) to the countries of the Middle East. The chapter argues that for Turkey, the use of soft power was a tool to re-establish relations with, and acquire acceptance in, its neighborhood. In the case of the South Caucasus, Turkey attempted to reconnect with a region that it was cut off from for a long time due to the Sov…

  • The Middle East in Turkey–USA Relations: Managing the Alliance

Meliha Altunisik, Meliha Benli Altunışık•ARTICLE•Journal of Balkan and Near…•2013

The Middle East has been increasingly factoring into the relations between Turkey and the USA since the end of the cold war. Ironically, the issues related to this region simultaneously intensify and erode the bilateral relations. For the USA, the significance of Turkey has always related to some extent to the Middle East. For Turkey, on the other hand, during the cold war years this connection was not always welcomed. In the aftermath of the col…

  • Worldviews and Turkish foreign policy in the Middle East

    Open Access•Meliha Altunisik, Meliha Benli Altunışık•ARTICLE•New Perspectives on Turkey•2009•Cited by: 26•References: 6

Turkish foreign policy in the Middle East has become highly contested in the last two decades. The changes in the international and domestic environment have led to the emergence of competing ideas as to the elements of Turkish foreign policy in this region. This article argues that these ideas ultimately represent worldviews as they start with different assumptions about what Turkey is, what the basis of Turkey's interest and involvement should …

  • From Distant Neighbors to Partners? Changing Syrian-Turkish Relations

    Open Access•Meliha Altunisik, Meliha Benli Altunışık et al.•ARTICLE•Security Dialogue•2006•Cited by: 21•References: 5

The growth of cooperative relations between Syria and Turkey, after the two countries came to the brink of war in 1998, has been a major development in the Middle East. This article examines both the reasons behind increasing ties between the two countries and the new challenges this rapprochement is facing due to the rapidly shifting international context. It argues that although systemic factors have been crucial in setting up the parameters of…
