  • Fraught spaces: The risks, challenges and failures of collaborative public histories

    Open Access•Sarah Lloyd, Gary Rivett•ARTICLE•Rethinking History•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 17

Throughout this article, we examine the potential pathways towards failure in public engagement projects as well as specific experiences of failure. Our aim is to identify some core reasons why attempts by historians to work with people beyond the campus contain risk and might fail. To do this, we focus on the types of relationships that are formed as a result of collaboration and emphasise the role of dialogue: of speaking and, more importantly,…

  • Imagining Change, Imaginary Futures: “Conditions of Possibility” in Pre-Independence Southern Rhodesia, 1959–1963

    Open Access•Rory Pilossof, Gary Rivett•ARTICLE•Social Science History•2019•References: 22

This article invites historians to think more critically about the language, narratives, and tropes historians use to identify, describe, and explain processes of change. By doing so, we raise questions about the possibility of historicizing ideas and experiences of change. The suitability of historians’ descriptive and explanatory tools and frameworks for understanding one of the most important aims of historical scholarship is often very limite…

  • Crowd Actions in Britain and France from the Middle Ages to the Modern World

    Gary Rivett•ARTICLE•French History•2018

What might a general theory of riot, public protest and insurrection look like? The introductory injunction to historians to attempt an answer to this question frames this ambitious collection of essays on the history of British and French crowd actions. Beyond general statements that surmise ‘people who were involved in [crowd actions] were never powerless’ or that the ‘universal interest, the very goal, of those engaged in these movements was t…

  • Engaging People in Making History: Impact, Public Engagement and the World Beyond the Campus

    Open Access•Laura King, Gary Rivett•ARTICLE•History Workshop Journal•2015•Cited by: 1

By examining the longer history of engagement between academics and those outside the academy and reflecting on recent experiences of collaboration, this paper provides a critical perspective on understandings of engagement and the 'impact' of historical research today. Considering in particular the UK higher education landscape and the recent Research Excellence Framework measurement exercise, we argue that the current approach of universities, …

  • Activism, Mobilisation and Political Engagement: Comparative Historical Perspectives

    Open Access•Gary Rivett•ARTICLE•Journal of Historical Sociology•2015•Cited by: 1

This editorial introduction discusses and explains the broader research context underpinning the essays, namely the Leverhulme Trust-funded Research Network, "The Comparative History of Political Engagement in Western and African Societies". It provides a brief overview of the intellectual background to the network's agenda, and, in particular, argues that comparative sociological approaches to the study of political engagement have left it inade…

  • English Newsbooks, Storytelling and Political Criticism: Mercurius Aulicus and the Solemn League and Covenant, September–October 1643

    Gary Rivett•ARTICLE•Media History•2012•Cited by: 2•References: 5

The question of how newsbook storytelling contributed to the cultivation and development of thinking about particular political practices during the English Civil Wars in the 1640s needs systematic attention. A sustained examination of newsbook narratives reveals assumptions about political order, activity and legitimacy that were being continuously reiterated in public discourse. Examining how the author of the Royalist Mercurius Aulicus chronic…
