Anatomie české islamofobie v éře migrační krize
This review article focuses on the phenomena of Islamophobia and its research in the Czech Republic with a particular emphasis on the era of the so-called migration crisis (2014–2016). It is mainly based on the findings of four ground-breaking team research projects published in several milestone collective monographs in the research field: the primarily sociological and anthropological empirical research done by Daniel Topinka and his extensive …
Sharing the Knowledge at Habsburg Medical Faculties in the Baroque Era: The Case of Jan František Löw’s Reading List for Medical Students in Prague (1693)
In 1693, professor Jan František Löw von Erlsfeld published a reading list for the students of medicine at Charles-Ferdinand University in Prague. The list records over 350 authorities from Aristotle to Johann Zwelfer and offers a unique insight into the structure of medicine and knowledge-sharing. It also points towards the fact that the Prague faculty was developing intellectual connections with other schools within the Habsburg domain. This pa…
Protection from Smallpox before 1700: The “Buying of Pustules” in Early Modern Central Europe
Smallpox posed a significant epidemiological threat in the early modern period. The eradication of smallpox in the 20th century was preceded by numerous medical discoveries, such as vaccination. Even before that, so-called variolation, i.e. an older and riskier form of smallpox protection, had spread in Europe after being imported from the East in the 1720s. This text explains how Europeans fought smallpox even before variolation was introduced. …
Mediální džihád v reflexi představitelů českých muslimů: Meze odsuzování islámského terorismu a (de)privatizace náboženství v České republice
This paper focuses on two intertwined research questions, namely, what is the perception of the Czech media coverage of jihad among the Czech Muslim leaders, and what is their perception of the public and media demand for their condemnation of the terrorist attacks perpetrated abroad in the name of Islam and jihad? The paper aims to discuss the research findings in the broader context of the risk of the possible future social exclusion of the as …

Džihád v pojetí představitelů českých muslimů. Interpretační rozmanitost a její příčiny
The paper is based on interviews with Czech Muslim community leaders and focuses on the way they interpret the concept of jihad, how they think the concept should be implemented in action, and what factors shape their interpretations. It reveals two parallel understandings of the concept: a wider interpretation (i.e., the struggle to promote something good) and a narrow one (armed struggle). Three different typologies of jihad have been identifie…

The beginnings of variolation against smallpox in Europe (1713-1721)
Smallpox epidemics ravaged the European population during the early modern period, with the number of victims being estimated in hundreds of thousands per year. This trend started to change at the beginning of the 18th century, when the earliest protective treatment (variolation) was introduced to Europe from the East. In the first part of my paper, I sum up major topics from the current historiography of variolation (e.g. relation to gender or p…

Great Middle Eastern instability: Structural roots and uneven modernization 1960-2012
The paper deals with the structural roots of political instability in the Middle East that has been manifested by the Arab Spring throughout the region since early 2011. The roots of the instability are seen in cumulative effects of highly uneven long-term social change in its three main dimensions since 1960s: (1) rapid social and demographic changes, (2) slower and fluctuating economic development, and (3) rigid political subsystem. The Middle …

Příčiny a logika sebevražedného terorismu podle Roberta A. Papea. Kritické uvedení do jedné ambiciózní teorie
The paper focuses on a long-term research project and findings of R. A. Pape who deals with root causes of suicide terrorism. Pape has elaborated the largest suicide terrorist attacks database (1980–2010) and a theory of suicide terrorism based on it. His approach consists of three levels of analysis: organizational (strategic), social (community), and individual logic. The terrorism pattern consists of a rational strategy, that is part of an asy…

Potential risk of occurrence of Phytophthora alni in forests of the Czech Republic
Phytophthora alni is an invasive organism that causes root and collar rot in alders, which significantly damages the forest and riparian vegetation of alder trees in Central and Western Europe. In the Czech Republic, this pathogen was first confirmed in 2001, and since then it has been gradually spreading from the west to the east. Here, we applied a model of potential distribution that estimates the level and spatial variability of the pathogen …
