  • Teaching and Learning Guide for

    Open Access•Bryan Hogeveen•ARTICLE•Sociology Compass•2008

Author's introduction By reflecting on violence in its many manifestations this course is intended to problematize youth's relationship to violence. Not only will it underscore how and why violence is perpetrated by young people, but, perhaps more important, how young people are affected. Students will reflect on how violence impacts and enters their own lives – sometimes in very inauspicious ways. Much of what counts as entertainment is laden wi…

    Open Access•Bryan Hogeveen•ARTICLE•Left History An Interdisciplinary…•2007

Left History features articles from a variety of theoretical approaches; these include feminist, marxist, and postmodernist deliberations on topics such as race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexuality, culture, the state, labour, the environment, theory, and method

  • Youth (and) Violence

    Open Access•Bryan Hogeveen•ARTICLE•Sociology Compass•2007•References: 14

Youth violence is a major concern. Everyday the news and entertainment media feeds the public a fresh supply of school shootings, stabbings at house parties and random gun violence involving young people. These narratives do not just entertain, they fundamentally alter our existence. But, should they? Are our fears warranted? This essay considers how youth violence shapes our ontology, that is, the way we view and interact with our world. Towards…

  • Discontinuity and/in the Early Twentieth Century Ontario Juvenile Court

    Open Access•Bryan Hogeveen•ARTICLE•Journal of Historical Sociology•2007•References: 10

Canada's juvenile court has become axiomatic. As such, it demands critical and historical questioning of its hegemony. It is in this spirit of critique that I highlight its arbitrariness. Two ruptures in the ostensibly smooth telos of Ontario's juvenile courts are discussed in this paper. First, I examine the precarious and uncertain inauguration of the Juvenile Delinquents Act. Second, I explore the Act's implementation in Toronto; particularly …

  • Unsettling Youth Justice and Cultural Norms

    Bryan Hogeveen, Bryan R Hogeveen•ARTICLE•Journal of Youth Studies•2006•Cited by: 3•References: 10

In a cultural milieu where adult views predominate, youthful voices are silenced and frequently invalidated. While the 'otherness' of young people renders them unique, it also justifies their exclusion as decision-makers in institutional arrangements that fundamentally impact their lives. Nowhere is this condition more evident than in the youth justice system. Youth are subjects of justice sanctioning without being its authors. In recent months t…

  • If we are tough on crime, if we punish crime, then people get the message’

    Open Access•Bryan Hogeveen, Bryan R Hogeveen•ARTICLE•Punishment & Society•2004•Cited by: 7•References: 6

Through a detailed analysis of media reports and debates in the House of Commons over the late 1990s, this article explores the construction and proliferation of Canada’s punishable young offender. I suggest that the creation and dissemination of this discursive category resulted in calls for a new ethic of punishment that emphasized protection of the public from risks associated with youth crime. Media, political, and public concern about the pu…
