  • Small Circles of Empowerment

Open Access•Joanna Bocheńska, Wendelmoet Hamelink et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal on Minority…•2023

This article investigates the activities of Kurdish women aimed at protecting and revitalising Kurdish language, which include collecting and publishing folklore, translating into Kurdish, and writing literature in Kurdish. Throughout the 20th century, countries like Turkey, Syria, Iran, and Iraq, in varying degrees, imposed restrictions on the use of Kurdish. Our primary focus is on Turkey because this country has been most repressive toward Kur…

  • Pillage as the Political Economy of the Kurdish Anfal Genocide

    Open Access•Kaziwa Dylan•ARTICLE•Genocide Studies and Prevention•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 9

Scholars are critical of how economists overlook “the questions of genocide,” and of how legislatures have not paid adequate attention to the subject of looting, except in the case of the Armenian genocide. This article, informed by interdisciplinary perspectives, uses government documents, data, and semi-structured interviews to discuss the overlooked triangle of looting, economics, and the Anfal genocide of the Kurds in Iraq. The study refuses …

  • We want to have a positive impact

    Open Access•Dobrosława Wiktor-Mach, Marcin Skupiński et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Ecology•2023•Cited by: 3

In this article, we investigate the emergence of modern environmentalism in the Kurdistan Region (Iraq), a de facto state in which ecological well-being is under serious strain. Social mobilizations in the Middle East have been depicted as confrontational and opposing the authorities. Studies of environmental activism in the region have also highlighted conflictual relations between social actors and the holders of power. In this article, we stre…

  • Demographic Engineering, the Forcible Deportation of the Kurds in Iraq, and the Question of Ethnic Cleansing and Genocide

    Open Access•Kaziwa Dylan•ARTICLE•State Crime Journal•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 6

The Iraqi state-directed demographic engineering of the oil-rich Kurdish districts of Kirkuk and Khanaqin was launched in the early 1920s and has continued to the present day. The history and use of Arabization as a geopolitical strategy for controlling oil revenue in the region has been investigated (Talabany 2008; 2011). The issue of genocide within these various demographic and ethnic constructions remains understudied. This article, informed …

  • Arts & Literature

    Open Access•Kaziwa Dylan•ARTICLE•Genocide Studies and Prevention•2021

I first observed the confident, sad, yet hopeful face of Nabat Fayiaq Rahman through the black screen of the TV. She was wearing a traditional, completely black Kurdish outfit that matched the stage curtains designed for the anniversary of the Anfal genocide, marked on April 14th of each year. The Kurdish Anfal genocide in Iraq was perpetrated by Saddam Hussein’s regime in the 1980s. Human Rights Watch (1994) estimates that as many as 182,000 Kur…

  • Kurdish Linguicide in the “Saddamist” State

    Kaziwa Dylan•ARTICLE•Genocide Studies International•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 3

Scholarly literature highlights the systematic actions taken in the modern Middle East to destroy the Kurdish language. With a primary focus on Turkey, scholars have described this process as a policy of linguicide, or language genocide, which is “the extermination of languages, an analogous concept to (physical) genocide.” 2 In contrast, similar processes at work in southern Kurdistan (Kurdistan of northern Iraq) have often been described as “li…
