Islam and ethnic tolerance
Using a national opinion survey conducted in 2009 in Kyrgyzstan, we focused on responses from ethnic Kyrgyz respondents in the south where major riots between Kyrgyz and Uzbeks occurred in 1990 and 2010. We performed latent class analyses on these responses to assign Kyrgyz into Muslim religiosity categories and construct a social distance scale to measure Kyrgyz’ levels of acceptance of Uzbeks living in Kyrgyzstan. We discovered that, in spite o…
The Mosaic of Muslim Religiosity and Social-Political Attitudes in Kyrgyzstan
This research explores the diversity of Islam in post-Soviet Kyrgyzstan and the implications of that diversity for social-political attitudes. Our hypotheses are (1) Kyrgyzstani Muslims can be categorized into gender-based religious groupings defined by various religious indicators and (2) membership in these groupings influences social-political attitudes. Using a 2011 nationwide survey in Kyrgyzstan and applying statistical clustering, we ident…
Boundaries of ethnic identity in Central Asia
Using data from nationally representative public opinion surveys done in 2005 in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, the authors focus on the titular groups as well as the Russians in both countries and provide assessments of their perceived ethnic commonalities with one another and with various other ethnic groups, including Uzbeks and Jews in each country. The results indicate that there are hierarchies of intergroup differentiations that help to deline…
Ethnic Social Distance in Kyrgyzstan
Unlike in some other former Soviet republics, when Kyrgyzstan achieved independence in 1991 its government granted citizenship to all residents, regardless of ethnicity or language. The government hoped this would help to quell incipient ethnic tensions in the country before they got out of hand. It was argued that, in a constantly changing ethnic landscape, citizens' identification with the country above all other considerations, including ethni…

Testing Foreign Policy Belief Structures of the American Public in the Post-Cold War Period
The basic attitudinal structure underlying the American public's for eign policy preferences is assessed by using both exploratory and confir matory factor analyses on two major post-cold war surveys containing many similarly worded questions-by the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations (CC, 10/94) and the Times Mirror Center (TM, 9/93). Although previous studies had stressed only two or three primary attitudinal fac tors and usually ignored facto…

Alternative Path Analytic Models of Student-Teacher Influence
Using data from a study of black adolescents and their teachers, as a heuristic device, this researcher examined the empirical implications of five causal models which reflected four common notions concerning the social influence processes assumed to characterize the student-teacher role relationships. These models included both uni-directional and bi-directional notions of social influence. The results from these models were extremely diverse an…
Changes in Black Sons and Daughters
Although there have been a large number of studies analyzing black adolescents' experiences in their family, no major study has focused on an assessment of potentially dynamic aspects of black adolescent/parent relationships through repeated measurements of the same individuals over time. In an analysis of 278 Southern, urban, black adolescents, this study examined these adolescents' perceived orientations toward their parents on closeness, openn…
