  • University consortium to address public health priorities and research capacity building in the Caribbean

Open Access•Allison Li, John Lindo et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Education•2023

The State University of New York (SUNY) – University of the West Indies (UWI) Health Research Consortium (HRC) was implemented in 2015 by the SUNY Global Health Institute (GHI) and the SUNY-UWI Center for Leadership and Sustainable Development. The goal was to advance public health in the Caribbean through collaborative research and education among faculty and students at SUNY and UWI. The Consortium is now a dynamic matrix addressing health prio…

  • Deconstructing Eurocentrism in skin pigmentation research via the incorporation of diverse populations and theoretical perspectives

    Open Access•Yemko Pryor, John Lindo•ARTICLE•Evolutionary Anthropology Issues…•2023•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 75

The evolution of skin pigmentation has been shaped by numerous biological and cultural shifts throughout human history. Vitamin D is considered a driver of depigmentation evolution in humans, given the deleterious health effects associated with vitamin D deficiency, which is often shaped by cultural factors. New advancements in genomics and epigenomics have opened the door to a deeper exploration of skin pigmentation evolution in both contemporar…

  • Genomic evidence for the Pleistocene and recent population history of Native Americans

Open Access•Maanasa Raghavan, Matthias Steinrücken et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2015

Genetic history of Native Americans Several theories have been put forth as to the origin and timing of when Native American ancestors entered the Americas. To clarify this controversy, Raghavan et al. examined the genomic variation among ancient and modern individuals from Asia and the Americas. There is no evidence for multiple waves of entry or recurrent gene flow with Asians in northern populations. The earliest migrations occurred no earlier…

  • Primer genoma mitocondrial en restos humanos de la Costa de Santa Cruz, Argentina

    Open Access•Josefina M B Motti, Erika Hagelberg et al.•ARTICLE•Magallania•2015

We describe the complete mitochondrial genome sequence of an adult male skeleton, discovered at Caadn Misioneros (Santa Cruz Province, Argentina), and dated 70 30 years before present. The DNA sequence corresponded to haplogroup D4h3a5, native to the Americas and exclusive to the south of Patagonia, where it has been observed both in ancient and present-day individuals. This is the first mitochondrial DNA data of the Atlantic coast of Patagonia o…

  • Genetic ancestry and indigenous heritage in a Native American Descendant Community in Bermuda

    Open Access•Jill B Gaieski, Amanda C Owings et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2011•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 74

Discovered in the early 16th century by European colonists, Bermuda is an isolated set of islands located in the mid‐Atlantic. Shortly after its discovery, Bermuda became the first English colony to forcibly import its labor by trafficking in enslaved Africans, white ethnic minorities, and indigenous Americans. Oral traditions circulating today among contemporary tribes from the northeastern United States recount these same events, while, in Berm…

  • Occurrence of Cryptosporidium oocysts and Giardia cysts in water supplies of San Pedro Sula, Honduras

    Open Access•Helena M Solo‐Gabriele, Helena María Solo-Gabriele et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Panamericana de Salud…•1998

During June 1996, water supplies of the city of San Pedro Sula, Honduras, were sampled to obtain an assessment of Cryptosporidium oocyst and Giardia cyst concentrations. Each sample was concentrated and stained with an indirect immunofluorescent antibody, and parasites were counted through microscopic analysis. In three surface water supplies, Cryptosporidium oocyst concentrations ranged from 58 to 260 oocysts per 100 L, and Giardia cysts were pr…

  • Increased prevalence of Plasmodium falciparum malaria in Honduras, Central America

Open Access•Carol Palmer, Carol J Palmer et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Panamericana de Salud…•1998

We report on our investigation of a malaria outbreak in Honduras, Central America, in January 1997. We tested 202 patients with fever and chills using thin and thick blood film microscopy. Sixteen patients lived in the city and the rest lived in rural areas. A total of 95 samples (47%) were positive for malaria parasites. Seventy-nine percent (63/80) of the rural patients were infected with Plasmodium vivax and 21% (17/80) were infected with P. f…
