  • Shrovetide Memorial

    Open Access•Benjamin Halligan•ARTICLE•The Downside Review•2025

This article considers a school production of R. C. Sherriff’s 1928 anti-war play Journey’s End, at Stonyhurst College in 1930, under the direction of a Jesuit priest who had served as an army chaplain during the First World War. The production was presented on the occasion of Shrovetide which, the article argues, in tandem with a wider tendency of the beginnings of memorialisations of the war dead, effectively allowed for the production to be re…

  • Sway of the sea

Benjamin Halligan•ARTICLE•New Review of Film and Television…•2021

This article expands on the condemnatory Leni Riefenstahl/Kathryn Bigelow association made by Naomi Wolf in 2013, through a consideration of aesthetics, landscapes and ecology, and potential parallels between Bigelow‘s work and Riefenstahl‘s earlier ‘Mountain Films’ period. Bigelow reaches for a feminised, New Age mysticism through which her characters are momentarily lifted out of their mundane earthly concerns to commune with the wider universe…

  • High-resolution crystal structure of gelsolin domain 2 in complex with the physiological calcium ion

Open Access•Benjamin Halligan, Michela Bollati et al.•ARTICLE•Biochemical and Biophysical…•2019

The second domain of gelsolin (G2) hosts mutations responsible for a hereditary form of amyloidosis. The active form of gelsolin is Ca 2+ -bound; it is also a dynamic protein, hence structural biologists often rely on the study of the isolated G2. However, the wild type G2 structure that have been used so far in comparative studies is bound to a crystallographic Cd 2+ , in lieu of the physiological calcium. Here, we report the wild type structure…

  • This Is Father Berrigan Speaking from the Underground”

    Benjamin Halligan•ARTICLE•TDR/The Drama Review•2018

The letter “Father Berrigan Speaks to the Actors from Underground” suggests the conception of a radical theatre, intended as a contribution to a cultural front against the US government as it escalated the war in Vietnam. Berrigan’s dramatization of the trial in which he and fellow antiwar activists were arraigned for publicly burning draft cards in 1968, The Trial of the Catonsville Nine, coincided with Berrigan’s efforts to continue his ministr…

  • Modeling Affective Labor

    Benjamin Halligan•ARTICLE•Cultural Politics an International…•2017

Photographer Terry Richardson works in a digital aesthetic vernacular that looks more to underground hard-core pornography of yesteryear than traditions associated with the institutionalization of erotica, as associated with Playboy. And yet his images, in Kibosh and Terryworld, anticipate the contemporary public recalibration of ideas of intimacy as associated with social media, tally with contested ideas of the sexualization of female empowerme…
