The problem of salvation: A clue from Robert Oppenheimer
The article begins by looking at whether God will save all (universalism) or whether he requires a response on the part of man to effect that salvation. Tom Torrance's writing seems to suggest that both may be true. It is suggested that this paradox can be resolved, however, if, accepting the thesis in the scientific sphere by Robert Oppenheimer and in the theological sphere by John Macquarrie, we argue that both can be accepted as true and as co…
Can we have a theology of difference
The former Chief Rabbi, Jonathan Sacks, wrote about the dignity of difference. This article seeks to understand what this might mean in terms of interfaith relationships and in terms of relationships between Christians holding different views within the Church
A Christian and Muslim Plea for Education about "the Other" in Areas of Conflict
Societies in conflict usually portray negative images of “the other,” such images often being transmitted through the education system. Using school curricula in Bosnia-Herzegovina and in Israel and Palestine as examples of such a negative transmission, it is argued that real peace between societies in conflict will be developed only where especially the younger generation is enabled to see things through the eyes of those who are traditionally s…
New directions in relating Christianity to other faiths
The three traditional models of the relationship of Christianity to other faiths are outlined: exclusivism, inclusivism and pluralism. Each of the three is critiqued and it is suggested that we need to move beyond these models and adopt instead a more descriptive technique through which we can better describe the relationship in a more detailed and nuanced way

Jews and Christians from Leeds discuss the Israel/Palestine issue and visit Israel and Palestine together
This article will enable the reader to 'listen in' to some of the discussion that took place in a series of meetings of an interfaith group in Leeds which looked at the issue of Israel and Palestine. Following a brief description of problems associated with education about 'the other' in both countries, it concludes with an account of a joint Jewish/Christian fact-finding visit to Israel and Palestine in which education was one of the featured to…

Is Democracy a Cure for Terrorism? A Review of Natan Sharansky's The Case for Democracy: The Power of Freedom to Overcome Tyranny and Terror 1
This article examines the claim by Natan Sharansky that the establishment of democracy in countries that are currently under an autocratic or tyrannical regime will result in an end terror. Sharansky sees a direct link between the promotion of human rights and democracy on the one hand and peace and security on the other. The review article argues that the establishment of democracy alone will not be sufficient to end terror. The pursuit of justi…
Sailing Between Ofsted, Scylla and Charybdis: A Yorkshire school gives new meaning to spiritual development
This paper describes how a school in York developed a unique understanding of spiritual development. Such an understanding led the school to construct a series of six avenues through which it believed pupils might have their spirituality developed. These six avenues involved nearly every department in the school and meant that spiritual development was seen as a whole school issue. Once established it was recognised that each avenue reflected or …

(2003). Religion and peacemaking in Palestine This essay is dedicated to the memory of James Hurd, who died at the age of 14 in May 2002. James's intelligence, his Christian faith, his delight in giving, his unassuming nature, his placid temperament and his infectious sense of humor marked him out as a nascent peacemaker and reconciler. clared that the coalition war in Afghanistan is not a war against Islam. Islam, however, was a feature of the events of 11 September 2001 and of the events that followed. Should the conflict between the United States and Osama bin Laden and between the coalition forces and the Taliban be seen as an example of a conflict between two religious traditions in the way Professor Samuel Huntington prophesied in his seminal "Clash of Civilizations" essay…
Monarchs, mosques, and military hardware: A pragmatic approach to the promotion of human rights and democracy in the Middle East
Just as one cannot paint a single picture of human rights in the different countries of the Middle East, neither can one paint a single picture when it comes to issues of democracy and government. This article makes the case that the West should support moves toward democracy in countries of the Middle East, even if those moves are partial and their direction uncertain. Actual decisions need to be guided by pragmatic political judgment
The threat of militant Islam: A fundamental reappraisal
This article begins by examining some possible flashpoints in the Middle East where fundamentalist Islamic groups might seem to represent a threat: Iran, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia are examined along with other countries. If a fundamentalist interpretation of the Qur'an is taken and the teachings of certain fundamentalist Islamic leaders are examined, the conclusion is made in this article that fundamentalist Islam does appear to represent a threat …
