Earning the Role
Fatherhood has become an achieved status among complex, disadvantaged families. Stepfathers may have an advantage over nonresident biological fathers in earning the father role; in-depth interview studies reveal that nonresident fathers are often stripped of the father label while stepfathers commonly achieve it instead. Re-thinking Stepfathers' Contributions
Using data from a contemporary cohort of children, we revisit the question of whether children benefit from being close to and engaging in activities with a stepfather. We deploy the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, a birth cohort study of nearly 5000 children born in US cities in 1998-2000, with a large oversample of nonmarital births. We explore the relationships between stepfathers' closeness and active engagement and youth's intern…
Acute care utilization and housing hardships in American children

Housing assistance limits rental payments to a third of families’ incomes, cushioning them from financial shocks and promoting residential stability. Using 39 years of data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, this study explores the association between housing assistance and moving among low-income children living i…
Neighborhood Physical Disorder and Early Delinquency Among Urban Children
The neighborhoods in which children grow up have consequences for their short- and long-term well-being. Although most neighborhood research measures disadvantage at the census tract level, more proximate physical characteristics of neighborhoods may be more relevant indicators of neighborhood quality for the well-being of young children. Using the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, this study explores the association between these more …
