  • Components of an Effective Faculty Development Program

    William H Bergquist, Steven R Phillips•ARTICLE•The Journal of Higher Education•1975•Cited by: 9•References: 7

Since piecemeal efforts to improve college and university teaching have generally proven ineffective, we must turn to a comprehensive approach to faculty development, through which we can develop new methods of evaluation and diagnosis, find viable ways of introducing new technology and curricula, and explore new approaches to instructional improvement. Faculty development must give serious attention to the impact of change on the faculty member …

  • Acquisition of Verbal Concepts as a Function of Explicit and Implicit Experimental Demands and Repression-Sensitization

    William H Bergquist, Horst D Klemm•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1973•Cited by: 1•References: 3

One hundred and two subjects were given three verbal concept acquisition tasks. The first task involved an implicit demand condition. The second involved an explicit demand, and the third again involved an implicit demand. Under all three demand conditions, Ss responded correctly at rates that significantly (p < .001) exceeded both chance rates and the rates of Ss who performed the task without experimental demands. Acquisition scores were signif…

  • The Repression-Sensitization Dimension and Emotional Response to Stimuli

    Open Access•Peter M Lewinsohn, William H Bergquist et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1972

The results of two experiments concerned with differential reaction patterns of repressors and sensitizers to threatening stimuli are reported. Contrary to expectation differences in duration of looking at unpleasant pictures between repressors and sensitizers did not attain statistical significance. Nor were there any systematic differences in autonomic, or other covert, response patterns found. Female Ss turned the unpleasant pictures off more …

  • Further Study of Short-Term Memory for Various Types of Stimuli as a Function of Repression-Sensitization

    Open Access•William H Bergquist, Peter M Lewinsohn et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1971

Sensitizers were hypothesized to perform significantly better than repressors on a short-term memory task. Ss were presented with pairs of visual displays for brief durations (.75 sec. per display). Each display contained one word, picture, geometric design, and color. After 0, 7.5, or 15 sec., Ss were instructed to recall these display elements. Differences in rate of recall between repression-sensitization (R-S) groups (as measured by the Byrne…

  • Leveling-Sharpening

    Open Access•Peter M Lewinsohn, Joseph R Flippo et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1970

The purpose of this investigation was to study the relationships between leveling-sharpening and (a) repression-sensitization and (b) shortand long-term memory. Two separate measures of repression-sensitization, the Byrne R-S Scale and the Rorschach Index of Repressive Style, were used. Repression-sensitization and leveling-sharpening were not related nor was the hypothesized relationship between leveling-sharpening and memory obtained
