  • Exploring ecologies of musicking and pain in scenes of palliative care: Case studies with Kantele

Wolfgang Schmid, Tia Denora•ARTICLE•Journal of Applied Arts and Health•2026

Though the experience of pain is real, pain can be framed, diminished and enhanced by many things that lie outside the body. Those things not only extend (and transform) the experience of pain; they also call attention to embodiment as an emergent and extended phenomenon. Focusing on how embodiment and pain perception emerge as extended phenomena thus highlights pain’s redress in ways that also extend current conceptions of ‘medicine’ to include …

  • Opening up openings: Zooming in on improvisation in the Theater of Home

Open Access•Robert L Burke, Maria Sappho et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Music•2025

This article presents a qualitative analysis of the opening section of an online improvisation session. It took place during the global COVID-19 pandemic where the participants were experiencing lockdown conditions. Phenomenological reflexive analysis and video elicitation techniques were utilized to develop a number of key themes …

    Open Access•Tia Denora•ARTICLE•Transposition•2021

  • Reflecting on Music and Erotic Agency: Sonic Resources and Socio-sexual action (Body & Society 1997)

    Open Access•Tia Denora•ARTICLE•Transposition•2021

This was a piece I published the year I began the research for Music in Everyday Life I was a much younger scholar (and woman), it was a particular "moment" circa 1995, and I was teaching a final year course on gendered bodies. I thought the Goffmanian perspective applied to sexual conduct would be good to think with -if you wanted to think about the nexus of culture and biology. But I also thought that Goffman did not take us

  • Music therapy research during a pandemic: An accidental experiment in caring for music

Open Access•Wolfgang Schmid, Fraser Simpson et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

This article describes how a group of music therapists and a music sociologist working on the AHRC-funded research project Care for Music responded to the situation they found themselves during the 2020–21 COVID pandemic, both in terms of their practice and the ongoing research project they shared. In particular, the article outlines how the challenging situation has produced interesting new practical, methodological and theoretical perspectives …

  • Fractured bonds and crystal capital: Social capital among Covid-era music communities

    Open Access•Alexander H D Crooke, Mariko Hara et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

As COVID-19-driven lockdowns and social distancing became the new normal in 2020, musicians experienced a reshuffling of their social networks. This article uses in-depth interviews with nine community arts practitioners in Australia, Norway and the United States to explore the impact of COVID-19 on their ability to practise, collaborate and connect with their musical communities. Results showed that, while social distancing has significantly dis…

  • Deconstructing Periodization: Sociological Methods and Historical Ethnography in Late Eighteenth-Century Vienna

    Tia Denora•CHAPTER•Music-In-Action•2017

This chapter offers an intentionally polemical attempt to rethink or deconstruct the notion of periodization as applied to Beethoven, to look critically at periodization as a way of accounting for Beethoven&s;s artistic development. Beethoven&s;s music was perceived by its late eighteenth-century audiences as falling outside conventional boundaries of musical value. Interpreted from a sociological perspective, biographical material about Beethove…

  • Mental Health

    Open Access•Tia Denora•CHAPTER•Wiley Blackwell Encyclopedia of…•2017

Since Durkheim, mental health has been understood to be a socially systemic and socially produced phenomenon. Sociological investigations on the topic consider cultural classification, medicalization, interpersonal dynamics, and cultural engagement.

  • Music-in-Action: Selected Essays in Sonic Ecology

    Tia Denora•BOOK•Music-In-Action•2017

This volume brings together DeNora‘s work published between 1986 and 2007. It includes thirteen essays, some of which have had a major impact on the field. The chapters trace the development of her work from its early concern with musical meaning, historical ethnography and theeveryday perspective, to its current focus on music in action. Topics covered include Adorno on Schoenberg and Stravinsky, a theory of music as a space and place for interp…

    Open Access•Tia Denora, Gary Ansdell•ARTICLE•Qualitative Research•2017•Cited by: 5•References: 16

In this article we draw on a recent, six-year ethnographic study of community music therapy and mental health to highlight strategies and techniques for documenting music's role in processes of change. We place these strategies in dialogue with the ethnographic work on arts and crafts by Paul Atkinson. In tandem with Atkinson, we propose a 'slow' approach focused on micro-processes of musical/para-musical bricolage whereby things are made and tra…

  • Making Sense of Reality: Culture and Perception in Everyday Life

    Tia Denora•BOOK•Making Sense of Reality•2014

This book suggests that the realities we take as 'real' are the result of real-time, situated practices that draw on and draw together many things - technologies and objects, people, gestures, meanings and media. Examining these practices illuminates reality (or rather our sense of it) as always, 'virtually real', that is simplified and artfully produced. This examination also shows us how the sense of reality that we make is nonetheless real in …

  • Musicians Make Markets

    Open Access•Tia Denora•ARTICLE•European Societies•2013•Cited by: 3•References: 4

Arts markets are not ‘neutral’. Rather, they are inevitably coloured by socio-cultural practices and regularities, some of which are embedded in and afforded by aesthetic forms and the values and images associated with these forms. The stabilisation of distribution and consumption patterns over time may thus be linked to, and structured by, often tacitly delineated meanings, values and practices associated with artistic products (musical works an…

  • Resounding the great divide: Theorising music in everyday life at the end of life

    Tia Denora•ARTICLE•Mortality•2012

Music in contexts of death and dying is an important but often-overlooked aspect of music in everyday life. In this article I develop an ecological perspective for end of life experience that takes account of the temporal-cultural complexity of being gravely ill and, by implication, being well. This perspective views wellness and illness as inextricably linked and relationally determined. To develop these ideas I use auto-ethnographic examples fr…

Through its embrace of the "cultural turn" and the "practice turn" in cultural sociology, recent work in the subfield of arts sociology has helped to advance our understanding of the role of culture in social life through its focus on arts-in-action. Empirically, this focus grew out of earlier work in the production and consumption of the arts, while, theoretically, it resonates with traditions within ethnomethodology, cognitive sociology, and th…

  • Consumption of Music

    Open Access•Tia Denora•OTHER•The Blackwell Encyclopedia of…•2007•References: 2

Music consumption has been a central topic in music sociology over the past three decades. Pursued through quantitative (Bourdieu 1984) and qualitative (DiMaggio 1982) methods, classic work in the area has highlighted music's role as a medium of status distinction. In more recent years, the links between taste and status have been shown to be, in the American context at least, more complex, the highbrow/lowbrow divide modulating into an omnivore–…

Theodor W. Adorno placed music at the centre of his critique of modernity and broached some of the most important questions about the role of music in contemporary society. One of his central arguments was that music, through the manner of its composition, affected consciousness and was a means of social management and control. His work was primarily theoretical however, and because these issues were never explored empirically his work has become…

    Tia Denora•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1991•Cited by: 30

The decline of the private house ensembles (Hauskapellen) resulted in a social broadening of music patronage and thereby tended to erode the traditional institutio…

  • Music sociology: Getting the Music Into the Action

    Open Access•Tia Denora•ARTICLE•British Journal of Music Education•2003•Cited by: 23•References: 4

Music sociology has addressed the history of the musical canon, taste and social exclusion. It has also addressed issues of musical value and the perceptual politics of musical reputation. More recently, it has developed perspectives that highlight music's 'active' properties in relation to social action, emotion and cognition. Such a perspective dispenses with the old 'music and society' paradigm (one in which music was typically read as distanc…

    Tia Denora•ARTICLE•Sociological Theory•1992

Chambliss's (1988) article is strongly oriented the task of reconceptualizing talent in ways that make it accessible study. He has attempted shift the conceptual underpinnings of talent from the realm of internal states and traits the realm of external practices and behaviors, and he has done so in ways that reveal talent be a useless concept. This is certainly an important achievement, and it is on these grounds that Chambliss's article has just…

The power of music to influence mood, create scenes, routines and occasions is widely recognised and this is reflected in a strand of social theory from Plato to Adorno that portrays music as an influence on character, social structure and action. There have, however, been few attempts to specify this power empirically and to provide theoretically grounded accounts of music's structuring properties in everyday experience.
