People Are Demanding Justice”: Pandemics, Protests, and Remote Learning Through the Eyes of Immigrant Youth of Color
This paper examines a youth oral history project conducted by/with/for immigrant youth of color and educators. Designed as a longitudinal five year project of critical participatory action research and youth oral histories, we sought initially to document generational experiences of schooling inequity, aggressive policing, housing precarity and immigration struggles. As a research collective we then confronted and chose to interrogate how COVID19…
The Holmes Scholars Network: A Study of the Holmes Group Initiative for Recruitment and Retention of Minority Faculty
Advocates for restructuring K-12 education recognize the link between effective teachers and student learning (Lewis, 1989). Effective teachers must address the needs of all children in a K-12 student population that is growing more diverse (Nieto, 1996) even as teachers are becoming less so (Ladson-Billings, 1991). Although the cultural distance between teachers and students continues to widen, few new teachers believe their preservice education…
High School Students' Computer Attitudes and Attributions: Gender and Ethnic Group Differences
This research examines gender and ethnic group differences in 171 high school students' computer attitudes and computer attributions. Preliminary data analyses indicated no gender or ethnic group differences in semesters of high school computer courses completed, including those currently enrolled in, or in semesters of planned enrollment in high school computer courses. The data were analyzed using four MANOVAs, and the results indicated no sign…
Correlates of Computer Anxiety of Adolescent Students
Selected correlates of computer anxiety of 1075 male and female students in grades 5 and 12 were investigated using a short form of the Computer Anxiety Scale developed by Newman and Clure (1984). The results of separate multiple regression analyses for the two sexes indicated that five independent variables, perceived effect of computer ability on interpersonal relationships, fear of computer hardware, availability of a computer in the home, per…
Performance of Adolescents Following Instruction in Conditional Reasoning: A Six-Month Follow-up
One of the more controversial subjects in adolescent research is the ability of instruction to affect performance and ability of a formal operational task. This study investigated the ability of instruction to improve the development of conditional reasoning skills in younger adolescents. Participants (N= 61) were instructed in conditional reasoning utilizing two 50-minute question and answer periods and concrete materials. Adolescents in the rul…
Practicing Counselors' Awareness of Gifted Students' Characteristics
The objectives of this study were to determine to what extent counselors accurately identify gifted, average, and mentally retarded students according to students' described behavior and to identify the characteristics of gifted students. A total of 441 counselors employed in public schools throughout one southwestern state were involved. To collect the data a mailed questionnaire was developed. The results suggested by the mean scores on the two…
Correlates of Life Satisfaction of Aged Persons
This investigation examined the relationship of life satisfaction with such characteristics as sex, age, health status, level of education, marital status, and income status. The participants were 281 aged men ( n = 82) and women ( n = 199) who lived in a large southwestern metropolitan area. Analysis showed that life satisfaction was significantly related to the aged participants' education level, income, and health status
Dogmatism and Externality in Locus of Control As Related to Counselor Trainee Skill In Facilitative Responding
It was hypothesized in this study that dogmatism and externality in locus of control are inversely related to skill in facilitative responding when the effects of specific counselor training program, number of graduate hours in counseling, age, sex, race, and religious affiliation are controlled. The participants were 215 master's degree candidates majoring in guidance and counseling at three southwestern universities. Dogmatism and externality w…
