Re-imagining the professional status of teacher educators in Europe
This article examines the professional status of teacher educators (TEs) in Germany, Poland, Spain, and Switzerland, using data from the Teacher Education and Development Study in Mathematics (TEDS-M) and uses Gardner and Shulman’s sixth commonplace of professional practice, emphasising the future-focused aspect of teacher education through ongoing programme monitoring. The findings highlight the vital role of TEs in engaging with collaborative, …

This article introduces the special issue “Advancing Equitable Access to Quality Education Globally: Innovations in Curriculum, Teacher Education, and Professional Development,” featuring articles that report on a multi-country project examining the challenges and opportunities of globalization for three types of reforms that have seen significant innovation in the past decade. Comparative research on teachers and teacher education
Increasing the supply of qualified teachers is a priority in many nations as a prerequisite to accomplishing UNESCO’s Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all by the year 2030. Questions remain however concerning definitions and measurement of the intended global indicators. In this article, I argue that the work of the comparative research commu…
Professionalism in teaching and the role of teacher education
In this article, I discuss the status of teaching as a profession using Gardner and Shulman’s framework emerging from their empirical examination of the professions in America and use Bernstein’s sociology of knowledge to help explain how recontextualizing agents struggle to dominate the construction and interpretation of professionalism in teaching. I use data from a major cross-national study of university-based teacher education to illustrate …

Innovation in Educational Research
A recent podcast titled Hallelujah, part of Malcolm Gladwell's Revisionist History series, had as its focus ... the role that time and iteration play in the production of genius, and how some of the most memorable works of art had modest and undistinguished births (http://revisionisthistory.com/episodes/07-hallelujah). A particularly intriguing aspect of this podcast was its exploration of how it is that creative ideas are generated and undergo c…
The Research We Need in Teacher Education
Prompted by internal and external criticism, demands for accountability, and an authentic desire to better understand processes associated with learning to teach, the field of teacher education--and more specifically, of teacher preparation--is experiencing a vigorous period of change. In some cases, this has resulted in innovations--such as current proposals to evaluate and regulate teacher education and preparation programs, reform of the requi…
A Global Call for Scholarship on the Policy and Practice of Teacher Education

Our team at Michigan State University (MSU) is committed to carrying on the outstanding stewardship of the previous editors at Pennsylvania State University (PSU). We recognize that American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE)--and by extension, JTE--represents a diverse group of professionals invested in the preparation and continued support of educa…
Programme theory, programme documents and state standards in evaluating teacher education
Across the USA as well as worldwide, numerous universities offer teacher preparation programmes and award such degrees. However, there are no consistent valid or reliable indicators for determining the coherence and quality of these programmes. An effective way of starting to evaluate these programmes is by looking at their standards and their documents. The combination of both could be considered the basis on which all major decisions about the …
The Mathematics Education of Future Primary and Secondary Teachers
In 2005, the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA), Michigan State University, and the Australian Council for Educational Research took an important step in advancing the field of education by partnering to develop and implement the first international and comparative study of mathematics teacher education. The study was made possible by the substantial funding received from the National Science Foundation,…
Examining Mexico and US Values Education in a Global Context
Discussion about values education has begun to dominate the educational policy agenda in a number of countries over the last ten years. Of particular relevance are questions on what to teach, how and why. This discussion seems to be more prominent among those countries undergoing vigorous political, economic and social change. In the last few years, under the ever-increasing influence of the US and the so-called global economy, Mexico has intensi…

The Influence of Teacher Education on Teachers' Beliefs about Purposes of Education, Roles, and Practice
Infusion of social constructivist theory into teacher education has prompted focus on change in teachers' cognition and thought processes with teachers creating their own socially constructed teaching (Buchmann, 1986; Buchman & Floden, 1990; Cochran, De Ruiter, & King, 1993; Condon, Clyde, Kyle, & Hovda, 1993; Schon, 1987; Zeichner & Gore, 1990). Teacher education has no unified conception of constructivism (Black & Ammon, 1992; Mosenthal & Ball,…
