Teacher leadership profiles among Nevada elementary teachers
Teacher leadership is vital for school improvement, yet little is known about the varied patterns of engagement or the factors supporting teachers’ leadership development. This study used latent profile analysis, a person-centered approach designed to identify unobserved subgroups based on shared profiles of teacher leadership engagement, among 656 Nevada elementary teachers. Five distinct profiles emerged, and random forest classification was us…
Understanding teacher leadership
Teacher leadership (TL) has been identified as key component of effective schools. While research has grown in this area, there is a dearth of empirically and theoretically supported measures for understanding TL. This study examines the validity and reliability of the Survey of Teacher Leadership (STL). The STL builds on previous theory and research in TL by creating an assessment of teacher TL practices and their associated self-efficacy in the…
Examining Teacher Leadership in the United States
This study, using data from the American Teacher Panel survey given by the RAND corporation in 2017, examined teachers’ experiences with teacher leadership (TL) in the United States. Geographic features like urbanicity and teacher demographic characteristics were used to predict different components of TL. Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) teachers reported lower levels of principal leadership quality, teacher influence, and shared d…
Open to All
This study is a response to calls for more research on diversity in teacher leadership (TL), particularly in urban schools. Critical race theory illuminated the role race and racism can play in determining who gets access to TL positions and how that access is characterized using liberal discourse and ideology. We used a component mixed methods design to explore whether administrators and teachers perceived that teacher leadership positions were …
A mixed methods investigation of administrators’ and teachers’ perceptions of teacher leadership
Teacher leadership has received attention for empirical and practical reasons. However, despite the evolution of the concept over the last several decades, there is still dissonance regarding the concept of teacher leadership. This study was grounded in the theory of professional identity to understand how administrators and teachers conceptualize teacher leadership. We studied the perceptions of administrators and teachers about teacher leadersh…
Teacher Professional Development and Practice of Project-Based Learning in Taiwan
Throughout the world, educational leaders are pushing for a movement away from teacher-directed learning to engaging students in student-driven learning. Project-based learning (PBL) has been adopted as an instructional approach that promotes student inquiry and cognitive growth. At the national level, Taiwan has launched a curriculum reform to encourage PBL-type learning opportunities for students. This study draws on the Teaching and Learning I…
Educational Experiences and Teacher Faith Integration Self-Efficacy in PreK–12 Mennonite Schools in North America
Educators at religious preK–12 schools attempt to integrate their faith into their teaching. Yet there is limited empirical study about how faith integration self-efficacy may develop. This study examines the relationships between the faith integration self-efficacy of educators at Mennonite preK–12 schools and their past educational experiences and initial teacher education. Regression analysis of survey responses indicates that the quality of i…
Teacher Motivation and Self-Efficacy
This study explores the motivations for becoming a teacher, teachers’ self-efficacy, and the relationship among motivations and teacher self-efficacy using data from the TALIS 2018. The data included responses from 1933 United States teachers with six or more years of teaching experience. Results indicate that motivations, which were more intrinsic and altruistic, for becoming a teacher are positively correlated to teacher self-efficacy of classr…
The Complex Web of Teacher Leadership
The complexity of contemporary schools necessitates principals supporting teachers to become teacher leaders while also supporting their instructional practices. Drawing on data from the 2018 Teaching and Learning International Survey, principal and teacher surveys examined how principal instructional support and a climate of shared leadership are associated with teacher satisfaction. Findings suggest that more frequent principal instructional su…
But are they good teachers? examining who takes up teacher leadership and how their instruction differs from their peers
Teacher leaders function in many roles in supporting school success including instructional leadership and supporting colleagues. This study draws upon the Status of the Social Studies Survey (Fitchett, P. G., and P. J. Vanfossen. 2013. ‘Survey on the Status of Social Studies: Development and Analysis.’ Social Studies Research and Practice 8 (1): 1–23.) to examine the responses of 6,702 US-based middle and high school social studies teachers to u…
Antecedents of faith integration self-efficacy in PreK-12 Mennonite schools in North America
Private Christian schools in North America endeavour to provide an educational experience that integrates religious and academic training for their preK-12 students. The integration of faith and academics has been studied in higher education institutions in North America, but not substantially in preK-12 schools. This study uses the lens of teacher self-efficacy to examine Christian school teachers’ confidence to integrate faith into their instru…
A bibliometric analysis of the teacher leadership scholarship
Research reviews contribute to understanding the evolution and trends of studies and guide future studies. Since no science mapping was provided to reveal the citation patterns and the research structure of teacher leadership (TL), we conducted a bibliometric review of 704 documents (1964–2021) in Scopus. We found that the academic area as a social field within which authors using English as a working language were more vocal. Meanwhile, universi…
Preservice Teachers' Skills to Identify Effective Teaching Interactions
Research about in-service teachers has shown that specific skills such as the skill to identify effective teaching interactions in others relates to the teachers' skill to engage in effective classroom interactions related to student learning. This study aimed to examine the relationship between these skills for 130 preservice teachers in the final year of their program. Findings indicated that preservice teachers' skill to identify effective tea…
