Down Syndrome
The incidence of Down syndrome (DS) at conception is highly dependent upon the maternal age distribution and age-specific pregnancy rates. Live-birth prevalence of DS reflects these factors and fetal deaths. Since the introduction of prenatal diagnosis in the early 1970s, the role of fetal deaths in the equation has increased. Between 1920 and the early 1980s, DS live-birth prevalence decreased in many populations due to declining fertility rates…
Applied Collaborative Biomedical Anthropology in a State Health Department Setting
State health departments offer a diversity of collaborative research opportunities for biological anthropologists. This article discusses some of the issues one may confront in conducting collaborative biomedical research in this kind of setting, drawing on my experiences in the New York State Department of Health. Unlike an academic setting, the choice of a research topic is likely to depend upon the bureau in which one works and not solely on o…
The Demography of Colony Fission from 1878-1970 Among the Hutterites of North America
Periodic colony fision has been characteristic ofHutterite society for more than 100 years. From 1878-1970 fission occurred an average of every 14-15 years when colonies attained a size of 166 persons. Emigrating groups were comprised of35%-55% of the mother colony's population. Between founding and fission, daughter populations grew at an average rate of 4.3% per year. Over time, fissioning size and length of fission cycles decreased, but the si…
Influence of cravings and aversions on diet in pregnancy
Using interviews at specific periods during pregnancy, this study examined the influence of maternal dietary cravings and aversions during pregnancy on frequency of consumption of dietary items, among a sample of 400 white, well‐nourished women in Albany, New York, whose pregnancies were ascertained by the 13th week. Seventy‐six percent of the women reported craving at least one item, while 85% reported at least one aversion. The greatest changes…
