  • Does She Want You to Open the Door? New Realities for Traditional Gendered Sexuality

    Open Access•Angela Towne, Elliot Ruggles et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Report•2019•References: 18

In contemporary United States culture, young people may face contradictory gender-related pressures. Changing gender norms resulting from social movements in the latter half of the twentieth century (e.g., sexual revolution, feminism) collide with traditional expectations, such as female virginity until marriage. This study used cross-gender focus groups to examine young people’s gendered experiences in the wake of social change. Data were collec…

This article presents an example of how qualitative data were used to refine a logic model for the Cornell Family Development Training and Credentialing (FDC) Program. This interagency training program teaches a strengths-ba…

  • What Does Evolution Have To Do with Legal Enclaves

    Open Access•Jesse Paul Crane-Seeber, Jesse Crane-Seeber et al.•ARTICLE•Politics & Gender•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 10

While we applaud Hudson, Bowen, and Nielson (2011) for demonstrating the correlation between two modes of contemporary sexist oppression (inequality in family law and violence against women), we are concerned about how they embed a contested narrative of human evolution into otherwise straightforward findings. We argue that claims about human evolution are unnecessary to their argument, and, more importantly, that the version of feminist evolutio…

  • Contesting Essentialist Theories of Patriarchal Relations

    Open Access•Jesse Paul Crane-Seeber, Jesse Crane-Seeber et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Men s Studies•2010•Cited by: 3•References: 31

This essay emerges from an ongoing mother-son dialogue about contemporary gender relations and their genesis in the history of patriarchy. In order to reframe patriarchy as a relational construct, rather than a simple group-based oppression, a performative notion of identities grounds the paper. It offers a critique of the body of literature that has developed under the broad heading of “evolutionary psychology,” insisting that gendered relations…
